Current plans call for
contracting for this work by late spring. The work will be handled by the School
District.

Commissioner Rollins asked the status of the renovation of McGarvey Field. Mr. Weeks
stated that the staff would meet with the contractor for Phase II at Community Park
to discuss schedule. The Department is attempting to convince the contractor to
place the irrigation system at Bechet-Griffin first to be followed by completing
McGarvey's ground work before moving to an yother portion of the park. Mr. Weeks
further stated that the goal was to disrupt the use of the areas as little as
possible. Mr. Weeks added tha t the Department has recei ved approval from the
Manager to work with the Sequoia School District to renovate the girls' baseball
diamond at Sequoia High Schooj at City cost, in order to supply a relief playing
field in the interim. If the District concurs with the arrangements, the Department
will move ahead as soon as ground conditions permit.

Commissioner Schenck requested the status of the Forty-Niner fences. Mr. Weeks will
be in contact with the Forty-Niner Organization within the next two weeks to discuss
this. Mr. Weeks added that the Forty-Niners contacted the Department with respect
to conducting a qommu~ity photography-signature day when the team returns from
training. This would be an initial effort towards providing some community acti-
vities. This will be a co-sponsored event.

Chairperson Weintraub mentioned the Community Gardening Conference Mr. Ferrando
attended and requested a grief verbal report. Mr. Ferrando highlighted the
conference for the Commission. He further mentioned that there was a good possi-
bility that the Department would utilize just this type of program in their
schedule. Chairperson Weintraub and Commissioner Pound requested copies of the
report of the Conference for information purposes. Mr. Weeks indicated he would
forward this information.

Commissioner Rollins mentioned that the Redwood City œribune suggested the
coaches anticipate that possibly next year there will be no after-school sports
and he asked if the Department would be developing some program to compensate
for the non-sports after school activities. Mr. Paulson felt that if the high
school takes over the intermural program that there would not be any need to
expand the Department's program. Mr. Weeks stated that the City may be expected
to fill in the gap in many of these areas but he felt the City may be handicapped
in accomplishing this due to lack of funds. Mr. Weeks added that the Department
may have to cut some programs in the process of revising the program structure.
The staff has been working on some alternate plans for complete overhaul of the
recreation programming as it relates to schools and parks and after-school program.
These matters will be thoroughly discussed with the Program Committee.

Chairperson Weintraub requested that there be a change made on Page 9 of the
Department report, Canyon Park, last sentence.
