Commissioner Slusser
referred to Resolution 87-16 dated October 1987. He cited an excerpt from
the text which in essence states that if the maintenance figure for the
Parcourse exceeds $1,500 per year, the City has the option of terminating
the agreement. Commissioner Slusser moved that the Commission require the
Department of Parks & Recreation to review all eighteen (18) Parcourse
stations assessing both the safety/liability factors and the yearly
maintenance figures. If the cost of maintenance exceeds $1,500 per year,
the City should exercise the option to terminate the agreement.
Commissioner Mortensen seconded the motion. Discussion followed regarding
the four stations (9, 10, 11 & 12), which are not located on City property,
but owned by Redwood Shores. In answer to several questions, Director
Griffiths stated that the Park and Recreation Department h~s been spending
the monies for yearly upkeep; and the Redwood Shores property was returned
to them in 1982 because the City was unable to maintain it. This property
involves four to five acres of landscaping which someday the City may have
to take over. Three of the stations were described as needing fairly
extensive renovation. Director Griffiths stated that it would be no
. problem to do an analysis. The motion was carried unanimously by a voice
vote. The Commissioners and Director Griffiths agreed that the analysis
and recommendation would be completed before the next regularly scheduled
meeting.

ITEM II - MEMORIAL TREES

Commissioner Davis stated that he doubted there is enough income potential
for this project to pay its own way. He expressed some of his co~cerns
regarding the implementation of this project. It-was determined that a
plaque would cost approximately $192.00. Director Griffiths stated that a
tree costs $40.00 wholesale; and it costs $40.00 to put it in the ground.
Director Griffiths stated that although this project would involve some
administrative and maintenance costs, he thought it could be profitable.
Other memorial items were mentioned such as Bar-b-ques, pathways, etc.
Acting Chairperson Swope stated that the committee was formed to address
these issues and to make a recommendation which the Commission could act
upon.

Matters of Comlssison Interest/Monthly Reports

Commissioner Coste11i stated that he feels people will spend $200 to $400
to commemorate births, weddings, anniversaries, etc. rather than trees or
other items dedicated in memorium only. He also reiterated the fact that
he will be in Europe from May 31,1990 through October 12, 1990 and offered
to give up his position for a replacement if the Commission prefers.

Commissioner Mortensen said that the softball players who use Griffin Field
expressed concern that there was no light in the playground area for their
small children after dark. He requested that this be corrected. He also
spoke of the many favorable comments about the fields that he has received
from the players.

Commissioner Mortensen voiced his concern regarding the timely publication
of the recreation schedule as Mary Anne Fisch1s report stated there were
some problems with the cover artwork. The secretary related that Ms.

'.,

!'
