.

as San Mateo County. Chairperson Nordness noted that litter is a
tremendous problem in Zhuhai. Since he had expressed an interest to visit
parks, he was given a driver and a translator to visit the area parks. He
reported that there is one large park in the city located on a bay and
observed 2 soccer fields, one basketball court, but no softball fields. He
mentioned that the parks are not a priority item with the city since people
in Zhuhai work 6 days a week and 10 hours a day. Parks are the
responsibility of the vice-mayor of health, education and welfare. Zhuhai
has a shallow water port and is building a deep water port. The delegation
to Zhuha; visited an elementary school where they were entertained by a
children1s band. He noted that not many people spoke English and few
people smoked. During the 3 1/2 day visit to Zhuhai, the delegation was
treated very well by their Sister City and a delegation from Zhuha; will
visit Redwood City in mid-June. An itinerary for this visit is currently
being developed. Suggestions were made that perhaps the delegation would
like to observe an evening of softball at Red Morton Park and visit the
adaptive physical education program at the Senior Center.

COMMITTEE REPORTS

Commissioner Davis reported that the Dogs in the Park Committee and
the Beautification Committee are considering co-sponsoring a children1s
program to raise the awareness of taking care of dogs. The Humane Society
has an existing program which could be used in conjunction with ours and
could be presented in Redwood City schools next spring. The Dogs in the
Parks Committee would like to'address the issue of whether there is a need
for a dog exercise area in Redwood City before deciding on where the site
should be located. Commissioner Davis requested that this matter be placed
on the May agenda. He stated that a list of five possible sites could also
be considered.

Nita Spangler, a member of the San Mateo County Park and Recreation
Commission spoke about an issue facing the County. She explained that
people want to be able to walk their dogs on leash in parks and on trails
and would be willing to pay additional fees when licensing their dogs. She
mentioned that David Christy, Director of San Mateo County Parks, says the
parks cannot provide this level of service and wants to give a high
priority to save wildlife. He is concerned that people would bring their
dogs and then let them off leash thus endangering wildlife. There is also
the problem of dog owners picking up after their dogs which is an
environmental issue. Councilman Murray suggested to the Commission that
they consider the outcome with the City Council when they get ready to make
a recommend a t i on. '

A meeting of the Committee on the Maintenance of School Fields has not been
called yet. Councilman Claire is the chairperson of that committee.

MONTHLY REPORTS

-Chairperson Nordness wanted to commend Erlinda Tulioc on her newsletter
and what she has done with her program. He explained about a video tape he
has given to Director Griffiths entitled IIChallenger Baseballil which ;s a
program designed by the National Little League for handicapped persons. He
asked that Erlinda be able to review the tape.

-Commissioner Mortensen inquired about the open landscape gardener
positions and what was being done to fill the positions. Superintendent
Hartman said that the previous list of qualified applicants was exhausted
and that a new requisition was just processed to begin recruitment for
people. She explained it would take between 2-3 months to fill the jobs.
