¿

.A

f

,j

the fields up to adequate playing standards. Since the fields have not been
renovated in 25 years. this is quite a task. Supervisor Hernandez explained
that last year three fields at Roosevelt and Orion Schools were renovated.
Little League supplied all materials for this project and the department paid
for the labor which was approximately $6.100.00. He said this year he hopes
to complete Fair Oaks and one other site. and plans to try to renovate two
fields each year. He stated that many years ago the School District would
pay half of the renovation costs and the City would pay the other half but
due to present budgetary contraints of the School District. they no longer
can afford to pay for these projects so the City has taken on this task.
Supervisor Hernandez also mentioned his crew recently repaired a backstop at
Taft School that was badly in need of repair.

Director Griffiths said there is a proposal to have the City take on the
maintenance of all school fields ( , of fields totaling 16 acres). The
School District has been approached regarding the maintenance of their fields
and have agreed to maintain them after we have finished renovating them.

Recreation Supervisor Wooten stated that youth groups do not pay for use of
the fields. Fees collected from adult softball have helped pay for new
lights and field maintenance. He said he has spoken with Little League and
soccer representatives and believes that we have a sufficient number of
fields right now in Redwood City proper.

The Commissioners thanked Supervisor Wooten and Hernandez for their
presentation.

ITEM 2 - Red Morton Center Update

Recreation Supervisor Julie Hannon explained there are currently funds
allocated in the Capital Improvement budget for a new floor at the Red Morton
Center. The plans are to take the funds allocated and use them for a
feasibility study for a new Red Morton Center. She said that Recreation
Center Supervisor Jan Knight, Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor Mike
Blandino and Childcare Director Bruce Utecht have visited seven other centers
in the area which were: Mt. View Sports Center. Cupertino Community Center.
City of Sunnnyvale Gymnasium. City of Santa Clara Sports' Center. Washington
High School Sports Center (Fremont). Centerv;lle Community Center (Fremont),
and the San Ramon Community Center. She explained the visits were very
productive and informative and the group got some great ideas from each
center and have learned alot by each center1s mistakes. Commissioner
Mortensen suggested visiting Burgess Park in Menlo Park.

Recreation Center Supervisor Jan Knight went over the Request for Proposals
(RFP) and noted that the committee would really like the new center to
include a gymnasium. child care area and teen center. Commissioners Swope
and Davis felt the committee should list everything they would want in the
center in the RFP because we don1t want the Center to be obsolete before it
is built. They suggested focusing on making the facility fit the program and
not the other way around. It was suggested the committee start on a larger
scale as the center could always be down-scaled.

Nita Spangler suggested using a citizens advisory committee to get community
input on the project. Chairperson Slusser felt it was important to get the
public to IIbuy-inll on the project from the beginning of the process.

/'

.
