.

)

(

¡

..

and asked the Commissioners if this was something they would like to do. It
was also mentioned having a booth at the Labor Day Festival at the Senior
Center on Labor Day and Make-a-Circus on August 8. The Commissioners
indicated they would be in favor of it as long as we could complete the entire
tile process there.

Chairperson Swope spoke about the tiles to be installed near the Kids Klub
area in the new Red Morton Center. Heath Tiles located in Sausalito has 6ft
square tiles which can be imprinted with one hand print or 12" square tiles
which can be imprinted with several hand prints (family tile). In order to
determine the various options available and what would be the most efficient
way to manage the program, Chairperson Swope announced that she,
Cultural Commissioners Virginia Ball and Tamara Piulle, and Recreation
Summer Intern Julie Calleja will be attending a training at Heath Tiles on
August 1. Chairperson Swope said there are two options available; either we
pay a representative from Heath Tiles $100.00 per hour to handle the tiles for
us or we handle it ourselves. The Commissioners agreed to leave it up to the
people attending the training to determine the best way to operate the
program after they attended the training and obtained more information
from the vendor.

Chairperson Swope gave an update of the grant application process and stated
she has contacted about 25% of the 47 foundations she has identified as
potential donors. She has developed a cover letter which will accompany the
information packets for the grant applications. The Commissioners gave her
n am es of the v ari ous companies / or ganiza tions they have a p pro ached 0 r will
approach for funding. Chairperson Swope noted that many foundations fund
programs but do not fund capital items. She made note of those found a nons
in the event we would like to contact them later for program funding.

Director Griffiths stated the Red Morton construction project is back on
sched we and on budget. The expected opening of the new building will be
around January 19 or 20.

Chairperson Swope mentioned that at a previous Commission meeting, it
was suggested that rather than purchase art work for the new Red Morton
Center at a cost of $15,000.00, that art work be donated by artists from the Art
Center. The art work suggested for the facility is a large wall tapestry which
will hang in the main lobby of the building. The Cultural Commission has
already researched this matter and have contacted artist Helen Weber who
designs this type of art work. Chairperson Swope showed a sampling of Ms.
Weber's art work and a diagram she developed to indicate where the art work
would hang.. Ms. Weber will design a piece of art work which will be specific
to the building and reflect the activities of the facility. The tapestries are low
maintenance and will be graffiti-proof because of its location in the lobby.
