<br />J Park1&: RecrefJtion Commission <br />Minutes of October 22,1997 <br /> <br />Page 2 <br /> <br />ITEM 2 - WORKPLAN MEMO FROM SUPERINTENDENT HOVER <br /> <br />The Commissioners discussed their concerns with Superintendent Hover's workplan <br />memo and agreed to discuss it further with him at the November meeting. <br /> <br />ITEM 3 - STAFFORD & STULSAFT PARK PROjEO UPDATE <br /> <br />Manager Gibbons stated that MIG met with Superintendent Hover, Manager Julie <br />Hannon, and himself to discuss the information that was gathered at the public <br />meetings in September. MIG will take this needs list and use it to develop a first <br />draft of the conceptual design which will be presented to staff in December. The <br />draft will then be revised and brought to the Commission at their january <br />meeting/public hearing. The final conceptual design will be presented to Council in <br />February 1998. Commissioner Davis requested a timeline be developed for this <br />project to show how it wi II progress. The location for the january meeti ng wi II be <br />researched. <br /> <br />The followi ng items were taken out of order: <br /> <br />ITEM 5 - DOG PARK UPDATE <br /> <br />The Commissioners reviewed Superintendent Hover's memo regarding a proposed <br />site for the dog park. A site near the South Bayside System Authority (SBSA) has <br />been identified which is agreeable to the many people involved in this project. The <br />Commissioners will continued to be updated on this project. <br /> <br />ITEM 6 - PARKS AND FACILITIES MONTHLY STAFF REPORT <br /> <br />The Commissioners discussed the monthly staff reports from the Parks and Facilities <br />Division and Manager Gibbons answered questions from the Commissioners. <br />Commissioner Davis announced that A YSO has some extra funds available which <br />they would like to donate to our department for additional field renovations; he <br />would like to see better coordination in the planning process. <br /> <br />ITEM 4 - YOUTH ADVISORY COUNCIL UPDATE <br /> <br />Assistant Recreation Center Supervisor Adilah Haqq-Smith introduced four members <br />of the Youth Advisory (ounci I (Y AC) to the Commission. She stated that she <br />recruited members from all of the high schools and sent out press releases. During <br />the first year, applicants were interviewed by a panel of which Vice Chairperson Vic <br />Morton was a member. This year, it was an application process only. Members of <br />the Y AC represent Castelleja, Woodside, and Sequoia High Schools and Kennedy <br />Midd Ie School. Supervisor Haqq-Sm ith noted the many Y AC accompl ish ments: <br />speaking at the Tapestry Dedication Ceremony at Red Morton Center; hosting a Bay <br />Area youth conference at the Red Morton Center entitled "The Great Gatheri ng"; <br />painting curbs in the community as part of a Pride & Beautification clean-up; and <br />sponsoring a middle school/high school dance. Future goals of the Y AC include: <br />establishing a "Teen House" in Redwood City; establishing a skateboard park; <br />having input on the teen curfew issue; begin a "Safe Rides" program; and sponsor <br />an outside "Day on the Green" concert that could turn into a block party. She noted <br />that the Y AC will be doing field work on each of the topics on their future goals list. <br /> <br />, <br /> <br />~ <br />
