"

Park & Recreation Commission
Wnutes of May 24, 2000

Page 2

.

He stated that Public Works Services will be removing ten dead trees on
Redwood Shores Parkway. Superintendent Hover has sent copies of all
documentation regarding this situation to the City Manager to explain the
history and what has happened so far. It was explained that Public Works
Superintendent Gordon Mann came to the Commission for guidance in
October 1999, the Commission approved his request to remove infested
public trees and the issue is still not resolved. Commissioner Swo'pe felt
Superintendent Mann should have the authority to have public trees removed
when warranted, and there is problem with the ordinance if he cannot do so.
Commissioner Swope was very concerned about the end result of using one
pest to get rid of another because it could have negative effects upon the
community. The Commissioners requested that Superintendent Gordon
Mann come to the next meeting to provide an update on the program.

ITEM 3 - UPDATES

-Stu Isaft Pa rk
Superintendent Hover announced the Stulsaft Park Project went out to bid
this week and bids will be due by June 30. Construction should begin in late
July and the park will open in Spring 2001. It was requested that a sign be
posted at the site with the anticipated park completion date.

-CIP Budget Update
Superintendent Hover passed out a draft of FY2000-2010 CIP projects. He
spoke about a complaint received from a neighbor of Stafford Park who was
upset about the large number of people using the park and traffic/parking
issues as a result of the attendance. Superintendent Hover and Director
Griffiths visited Stafford Park today and found over 100 people using the
park. They spoke to many of the people there and found that most were
Redwood City residents and they also observed that 38 children were using
the water play feature. Superintendent Hover stated staff is considering
fencing off a portion of the Valota Road playground area at Red Morton Park
and installing a water feature as a future project. This might help relieve
some of the attendance at Stafford Park. The Commissioners discussed
potential parking issues at Stulsaft Park after it is renovated.

-Adopt-a-Park
Commissioner Joseph reported that on Saturday, May 13, approximately than
40 to 50 North Star Academy children and parents participated in the Adopt-
a-Park program at Stafford Park. Wegman's Nursery donated approximately
$250.00 in plants and shrubs for the project, which the children and parents
planted. Commissioner Joseph sent a thank you to Wegman's for their
generous donation and also sent local newspapers an article on the event.
She said she is trying to get one school per month to participate in the
program. Chairperson Davis said he will write a thank you letter to
Wegman's and NorthStar Academy on behalf of the Commission.
