Park & Recreation Commission
Minutes of August 23, 2000

Page 3

-Concern about location of restroom pad; having accessibility to service
portable toilets without going over the turf and other landscaping
-Keep the two play areas close to each other for parents supervising children
in both areas
-Garbage cans need to have good, tight covers to prevent animals and birds
from getting into garbage

Mr. Chang will take these comments back to the consultants for inclusion into
the design.

ITEM 2 - STAFFORD PARK

Superintendent Hover presented a staff report based on the issues received
from the public at the July 26 Commission meeting. He discussed the
following issues: Park Rules Enforcement, Interim Park Use Policies,
Reservations, and Changing Times of the Water Feature. Staff
recommendations for those issues included: Maintaining Police Department
presence in the parks and continued enforcement of park rules; installation of
one or two additional BBQs adjacent to selected picnic areas; maintain
current interim use policies at Stafford; select one park to test a pilot
reservation system; and maintain current operating times for water feature.

Betty Travers of 27 Lowell Street thanked the Commissioners for the interim
park use policies and felt there are less large groups and less garbage as a
result of these new policies. She said she does not want any more BBQs
added to the park and asked that staff let the neighbors know before this
happens. She requested that the interim park use policy signs be bilingual.

Police Officer Eric Stasiak reported that patrol officers who monitored Stafford
received the following comments: people suggested more permanent BBQ
pits be installed at the park; signage needed to be improved; and several
wanted cleaner BBQ pits so that they would not have to bring their own BBQs
from home.

ITEM 3 - UPDATES

-Stulsaft Park Construction
Superintendent Hover stated a meeting with the Farm Hill Neighborhood
Association was held on August 15 to let the community know what is
happening with the renovation of Stulsaft Park. The meeting was attended
by 28 people and was well received.

"

-Strategic Planning
Acting Director Centeno reported that the committee has developed a time
frame to go out to the community to get input. Consultant Marilyn Manning
is helping facilitate the process for the committee.

;

~

"
,
