Park & Recreation Commission
Minutes of September 27, 2000

Page 3

ITEM 2 - STAFFORD PARK

-Request from staff to install additional BBQs
Superintendent Hover provided the Commissioners with a proposal to install
three additional BBQs in existing picnic areas at Stafford Park. He stated that
these BBQs would be permanently installed in the park and coals would
remain in the BBQs and would not have to be removed. He spoke about the
report from Arborist Bob Mullins about the installation of the BBQs and the
effect upon the large oak trees on the site. Mr. Mullins reported that the
additional BBQs would present no harm to the trees and that the trees are in
excellent health. Commissioner Truscelli said she spoke to people at the park
who were in favor with the recommendation of additional BBQs.

-Public Comment
Michael Verdone of 815 Arlington Road, co-chair of the Edgewood Park
Neighborhood Association, stated he is against the installation of additional
BBQs at Stafford Park because he felt it sets a mixed message for patrons,
the park is too small, BBQs encourage larger parties, and the park is already
overused already.

Jennifer Stafford Sportorno of 1028 Harrison Avenue spoke about the history
of Stafford Park, felt that the park is overused, additional BBQs encourages
people to stay a long time in the park, and felt that the BBQs take away from
the park being special. She suggested that the remaining BBQ at Stafford be
removed in order to show that BBQs are not allowed at Stafford Park.

The Commissioners felt that Stafford Park will be less used when the
renovation of Stulsaft and Maddux Parks are completed. Pamela Gearhart of
51 Lowell Street spoke against the installation of additional BBQs because
she felt they would bring additional large groups to the park. She felt the
park usage has decreased since the new interim park use policies have been
in effect and felt it makes the park more enjoyable.

Elizabeth Travers of 27 Lowell Street stated she read the staff report on
Stafford Park which was distributed at the August meeting and pointed out
that people are still bringing in additional BBQs and alcohol into the park.
She spoke against additional BBQs at Stafford Park and felt that BBQs should
not be placed in any park of five acres or less.

Nita Spangler of 970 Edgewood Road spoke about the history of Stafford Park
and against the installation of additional BBQs at the park. She felt the park
w.as too busy and does not agree with the installation of the water feature at
the park due to water being a precious commodity. She is also distressed at
the lawn condition of the park. Mrs. Spangler spoke about the two lion
sculptures at Wellesley Crescent Park and felt that they need some attention

. .
. .<.

. <.
, .,'

, . . .~.

,
'. .)'
