'..
J

P¥k and Recreation Commission
Minutes of October 23, 2002

Page 2

The Commissioners discussed how traffic and parking would impact the
renovated park. Ms. Dragan suggested moving the current "truck route" on
Second Avenue to another street. It was suggested talking to Traffic
Engineer Rich Haygood about traffic calming efforts around Spin as Park.
Director Centeno suggested bringing this matter to the Friendly Acres
Neighborhood Association and having them take a formal vote in support of
this proposal and Ms. Dragan agreed to follow through.

M/S Davis/Walsh: To approve the Spinas Park design plans as
p rese n ted .
Motion passed.

ITEM 1 - YOUTH AND FAMILY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM
PRESENTATION

, A presentation was made by two members of the Youth Asset Team Project
through the Youth and Family Assistance Program (YFA). Becky Greene and
Michael Lunsben were accompanied by Emily Roberts, Coordinator of the
Youth Development Initiative of YFA. The purpose of their presentation was
to build awareness and support for a new approach to healthy relationships
between adults and young people; to review the 40 Developmental Assets;
and to give a chance for teens to practice and improve their public speaking
skills. The Youth Asset Team has also set an objective to persuade both
individuals and organizations throughout San Mateo County to adopt the
Youth Development Mode, a new framework for adult/youth interaction; and
to encourage adults to take specific steps to improve the way youth and
adults interact. Michael Lunsben spoke about the City of San Carlos
involving members of their Youth Advisory Board as non-voting members of
various boards and commissions as a way to include youth on decisions and
explained there has been great success with this program.

Superintendent Beth stated that the department works with various youth
groups from the Skate Park Task Force to the Youth and Teen Advisory
Boards. Superintendent Beth agreed to attend the next Youth and Teen
Advisory Board meetings to present the idea of having a youth'
representative as a non-voting member of the Park and Recreation
Commission.

M/S Davis/Joseph: That the Commission is supportive of the YAF
Program including the possibility of having a non-voting youth
member on the Commission, and to have Superintendent Beth bring
this idea back to the Youth and Teen Advisory Boards.
Motion passed.

, A;
, ',', ,:;1~,
