-

I ,,' I' Park and Recreation Commission

. .

Minutes of May 12, 2004

Page 3

staff has not observed this rule making any difference in the number of
people coming to Stafford Park.

Superintendent Hover stated his staff did some initial research into BBQ coal
dumping in nine of our parks. The statistics showed that coal dumping is
only happening in a few of our parks and he felt that an appropriate
receptacle for coals could be installed in those parks which could eliminate
. future dumping issues. Superintendent Hover said his staff would continue
to gather data and he would report back at the June meeting with more
information. The Commissioners discussed the issue and asked staff to
research the matter and also see what other cities are doing with BBQs.
Commissioner Davis felt the public needs to be notified abo'ut our new park
reservation policy using press releases, advertising, and signage with a
proposed implementation time.

ITEM 4 - CONSIDERATION OF RECOMMENDED COUNTYWIDE PARK
DISTRICT

Director Centeno announced that she, Chairperson Yapp and Councilperson
Barbara Pierce attended an informational meeting sponsored by San Mateo
County Supervisors Hill and Nevin on establishing a Countywide Park District.
She stated that all cities in the County are being asked for a resolution in
support of this proposal. The next step would be to have Senator Byron Sher
carry this legislation to the State Senate so that specifics of a district could
be developed for placement on a future ballot.

M/S Swope/Joseph: To communicate the Commission's support of
the Countywide Park District to the City Council.

The Commissioners discussed the topic and Chairperson Yapp confirmed that
the proposal is a conceptual one right now and the details have not been
sorted out.

Motion passed unanimously.

ITEM 5 - STRATEGIC PLAN SUB-COMMITTEE UPDATE

Superintendent Hover reviewed the completed Strategic Plan with the
Commissioners which includes in a three-folder format: Executive Summary,
Report and Appendix. The Commissioners gave their comments and
suggestions to Superintendent Hover, including adding a piece about what
you can do in your community. The next step will be to take the document
to the City Council in July/August then back to the groups who provided
initial input to get their feedback.

,;/.~.' .~;.. ,.~.;"" .
