<br /> <br />~ <br />1 <br /> <br />Park and Recreation Commission <br />Minutes of September 22, 2004 <br /> <br />Page 3 <br /> <br />Paula Thompson, a Redwood Shores resident and school teacher, said she <br />joined the Redwood Shores Paddling & Rowing Club. She expressed the need <br />to provide recreational programs for our youth. <br /> <br />Commissioner Joseph said she spoke with Craig Americanian of Stanford <br />University who indicated he wants the permit to be pulled. She said he felt <br />the structure is not sound, wants it torn down, and does not want to be <br />responsible. <br /> <br />Commissioner Slusser asked questions regarding the permit and whether it is <br />a different group with the same conditions. Connie Garcia, an advisor and <br />employee of Stanford University, confirmed that Craig Americanian was the <br />initial contact on the permit and that there is now a new contact on the <br />permit. <br /> <br />Donna Zacamy of ' the Architectural Design Board spoke about their concerns <br />on the erosion on the levee in front of the boat area; setting a precedent for <br />an outside group for daily racing activities; and the impact for private <br />property owners. <br /> <br />Chairperson Yapp reiterated at the June 23 meeting, Stanford Rowing & <br />Paddling was given the directive to gain approval from the three community <br />groups (Redwood Shores Community Association, Redwood Shores Owners <br />Association, Architectural Design Board) within 90 days to continue to have a <br />boat enclosure in a portion of Portside Park. Chairperson Yapp stated that <br />only one letter of support was received and two letters of non-support were <br />received. <br /> <br />Superintendent Hover explained the condition of the boat structure is fine but <br />it needs some repair. He noted that a public meeting concerning the erosion <br />of Redwood Shores lagoons was being held tonight at the Senior Center. He <br />also stated the original use permit did not go through the Park and ' <br />Recreation Commission, but went directly from staff to City Council. <br /> <br />M/S Joseph/Swope: To recommend that the City revoke the <br />revocable permit of Stanford University. <br /> <br />The Commissioners discussed the motion; the need to have another <br />organization partner with City; the need for public boat storage and public <br />access; the need to follow the direction of the motion from the, June <br />Commission meeting; and a suggestion to amend the motion or make second <br />motion to encourage Redwood Shores Rowing & Paddling Club to apply for a <br />use permit. <br /> <br />Motion passed unanimously. <br /> <br />
