<br />Council Members asked various questions and requested that the response and <br />analysis of the economic document would be provided to the Council for any <br />policy decisions in the future. Clarification was made that the EIR would pertain <br />strictly to the clinic which is the only project under the scope. <br /> <br />Dr. Jeffrey Shefren, Chief of General Gynecology at Stanford and Vice President <br />of Ambulatory Care, stated that the responsibility of the clinic resides under him. <br />He stated that although clear that Stanford is an academic medical center and a <br />provider of complex care both nationally and internationally. He stated that what <br />may not be as well known is that Stanford is a community hospital and has been <br />since it was built in 1959 with 60% plus admissions coming from our local service <br />area which includes San Mateo and Santa Clara counties. He further stated that <br />when looking at the admissions from San Mateo County, in virtually every specialty <br />Redwood City ranks either the highest or second highest in the number of <br />admissions. He summarized that they have worked with the neighborhood and <br />Chamber of Commerce and that Stanford is pleased with the site and the ability to <br />provide the advanced ambulatory actiyities to Redwood City. <br /> <br />Public Comment: <br />Nita Spangler expressed support for Stanford but stated her concern about a <br />recent telephone survey that began with the current Council election then went <br />into the Stanford clinic questions. She stated her dissatisfaction with questions <br />related to whether the City Council should seek from Stanford a certain amount of <br />free service or not accept Stanford into the community. She further stated that the <br />opportunity to have the Stanford clinic in Redwood City is wonderful and that they <br />will be charitable when the occasion demands due to their general public outlook. <br /> <br />City Manager Everett stated that the City is not conducting such a survey. <br /> <br />Rosalba Alavez spoke in Spanish and an interpreter was present. The interpreter <br />translated that Ms. Alavez is a Redwood City resident and is present today to ask <br />that the community have a voice in the process. She is an employee of Stanford <br />Hospital and knows that Stanford is very prestigious and can bring good to <br />Redwood City. She wants to ensure that the community has a voice and that <br />Stanford Hospital brings something back to the community. <br /> <br />Linda Cornell, a longtime Redwood City resident and employee of Stanford <br />Hospital, stated that her concern with the clinic is that Stanford will be exempt <br />from property taxes yet benefits will be utilized such as the Police Department, <br />Public Works and the Fire Department. She stated that it is fair that Stanford be <br />publicly accountable for this project. <br /> <br />Linda Lopez stated that she is representing EI Concillio of San Mateo County <br />which has been in San Mateo County for 25 years and that the purpose is to <br />improve the quality of life for Latinos.
