6.1.1. - Page 2
ANALYSIS
Unlike typical playgrounds that commonly feature platform structures and separate a
family from playing together, the new playground will become the City's largest play
space and will provide a variety of slides, swings, spin and sway equipment for people
of all ages and abilities. Due to the size of the project, several phases were required:
Phase 1 — Two smaller projects were completed in May 2018 to allow an
expanded play area and provide additional parking. First, the Electrical
Services Relocation Project removed a PG&E transformer from the
proposed playground area and undergrounded the existing overhead
utility cables. Second, the Armory Parking Lot Project built a new parking
lot to serve the west side of the park including the future playground.
Phase 2 — This current phase will construct the playground, picnic area
and a safe, accessible drop off area between the Armory building and the
main playground entrance. In addition to the playground renovations, this
phase will focus on safe pedestrian access to the park as well as improve
lighting and drainage in the project area.
Phase 3 - A subsequent phase will improve sports field spectator areas
such as new bleachers and shaded areas to comfortably watch field
activities.
The improvements in Phase 2 include selective demolition, site clearing and grubbing,
grading and earthwork, irrigation work, concrete flatwork, walls and curbs, electrical work,
asphalt paving, curb ramps and truncated domes, and pavement markings such as
crosswalks. Also included are play equipment, park signage, fencing and gates, signature
Magical Bridge play structures and site furnishings, and highly accessible surfacing
specifically poured-in—place rubber and synthetic turf. Additionally, the renovation will
feature a new pre -fabricated restroom building and an interactive water feature. If funding
allows, the project will also include additional play equipment and shade structure, large
plantings, a new sidewalk along Valota Road, and decomposed granite pathways.
Staff anticipates authorizing construction to begin within 60 days of the award of this
contract. The westside of the park and a portion of the parking area will necessarily be
closed during the renovation and are expected to re -open for public use approximately
300 days from start of construction, weather permitting.
The bids received at the bid opening on August 30, 2018 are summarized in the table
below:
