5. 1 am a teacher and I give most of my working life to my students from our community. My pay <br />is about $5,600 for 10 months per year. My wife is currently off work to care for our kids during <br />their first few years of life. Our family (my wife, my two young children, and 1) live in a small 2 - <br />bedroom apartment and pay (well below market) rent of $2,400 per month. The rest of my <br />salary has to cover all of our expenses for the year and the two summer months. We are notable <br />to move to a larger rental unit because average rents for 3bd in RWC is way out of our range. <br />We've had to completely forget about the possibility of buying a house here for the foreseeable <br />future since price tags for single family homes are 1 Million and higher.We are seriously <br />considering moving away from Redwood City to some other location. Even if I take a pay cut, we <br />will be able to afford a much more comfortable standard of living. I love myjob. Our family loves <br />Redwood City and we desperately want to stay here. I hope Redwood City considers building <br />affordable units on city land. This type of housing will serve the next generation of teachers, <br />nurses, firemen, policemen, electricians, plumbers, constructions workers, service workers, and <br />what used to be called working and middle class people. All of these people dedicate their <br />working life to people in our community. Affordable housing seems like the bare minimum that <br />Redwood City should want to guarantee lest these people move away and were left with an <br />aging population with no city services ... Btw: a great model of building housing for teachers can <br />be found at Canada college. I could imagine other developments like this for the RWC school <br />district. <br />S. I strongly support affordable housing. There should be rent control to curb the vicious <br />greediness that goes on in our rental market all due to the Silicon and Tech markets. In a few <br />years I will be forced to retire early and move out of state due to the rise in rents and traffic <br />which will be horrendous. Thank you. <br />In opposition: <br />+8 1. That land is for use for all city members not a select few. Again.. why is this not part of the <br />building permit process forcing commercial builders to incorporate affordable housing into <br />thier projects <br />+7' 1 City owned lands are for the entire public use. Building for housing limits the use of the <br />land to those people only that are located within the building. If the City wants to sell the land <br />at a fair market value first, that is worth considering. <br />+5 1 Redwood City should encourage private construction to deal with a housing inventory <br />problem. This is a "feel good" solution that does not address the real problem not the scale of <br />the issue. @ <br />+4 1. Redwood City is getting too big and there are enough apartment buildings already going <br />up. Too much traffic! <br />
