The purpose of the work
plan is to align BCC work with the City's Council's Strategic Initiatives and priorities. Work plans are to be
prepared by the BCC members and presented to the City Council by the BCC Chair and Vice -Chair.
The SAC held a retreat last month to develop their work plan and identified three priority goals for the
next few years.
ANALYSIS
The draft SAC work plan (Attachment A) includes a new mission statement and three priority goal areas
for the Commission:
1. Housing for Redwood City Seniors
2. Transportation for Redwood City Seniors
3. Community for all Ages
Housing for Redwood City Seniors
With the increasing number of seniors in San Mateo County and in Redwood City in particular, and with
the continually increasing housing costs, there are significant impacts on seniors living on fixed incomes.
The Commission seeks to foster a range of housing options affordable to all income levels through policies,
programs, partnerships, and projects that support the creation and preservation of affordable housing for
Redwood City's residents. The Commission urgently seeks to identify innovative ways help seniors stay in
their own homes or remain in the City. This includes both market -rate housing options for those needing
to down -size from a larger family home and below-market rate housing for those who are struggling to
meet expenses on their fixed incomes. Additionally, resources beyond the updated Senior Homeless
brochure and the showers at Fair Oaks Community Center need to be identified to address homelessness
among seniors in our City. The SAC intends to also meet with the Housing and Human Concerns Committee
to help identify needs and resources for seniors.
Transportation for Redwood City Seniors
Transportation systems for seniors continue to be a concern of the Commission. The Commission seeks
to assist the Council as it develops infrastructure systems and programs that enable safe and efficient
travel for seniors in the community. They will continue to advocate for Senior Safety on City streets and
sidewalks and explore alternative transportation options for seniors. Additionally, the SAC will meet with
the Complete Streets Advisory Committee to express their concerns for senior safety in regards to
transportation.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.ore
186
