ATTACHMENT <br />CITY OF REDWOOD CITY <br />JOB DESCRIPTIONS <br />Principal Planner <br />Definition <br />Under general direction of the Planning Manager, plans, directs and supervises <br />professional planning activities of the Planning Division within the Community <br />Development Department; performs a variety of complex technical planning activities <br />relative to assigned areas of responsibility; and performs related work as assigned. <br />Supervision Received and Exercised <br />Direction is provided by the Planning Manager. <br />Assignments may include technical or functional supervision of subordinate professional <br />staff planner positions. <br />Distinguishing Characteristics <br />This single -position class is distinguished from other City professional planning classes <br />by the level, complexity and City-wide implications of project assignments. The position <br />of Principal Planner is a supervisory classification and is distinguished from the higher- <br />level classification of Planning Manager in that the Planning Manager is responsible for <br />the overall administration of the Planning Division. This classification is further <br />distinguished from the lower -level classification of Senior Planner in that the Principal <br />Planner has full supervisory responsibility over professional staff. <br />Examples of Duties <br />Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: <br />1. Plans, organizes and coordinates aspects of the City's planning function, <br />including program planning, budgeting, setting priorities and scheduling projects. <br />Assumes substantial responsibilities for current or advance planning duties. <br />2. Supervises long-term and complex assignments with responsibility for project <br />development, establishing priorities, developing timelines, evaluating work <br />assigned to staff and assuring quality and accuracy of departmental output. <br />3. Ensures accuracy, completeness and timely submittal of reports and analyses <br />prepared by staff planners for various boards or commissions and others. <br />4. Monitors complex projects as they proceed through the permit process and <br />investigates complaints about planning operations. <br />5. Assists in selecting, training, supervising and evaluating the work of journey level <br />professional planners and other support personnel. <br />6. Advises planning officials on issues regarding land use policy, zoning, <br />transportation and other community issues. <br />7. Makes presentations before the City Council, committees, community groups, <br />boards and commissions and other governmental bodies as required. <br />8.
