<br />Appendix A .. Glossary <br /> <br />Appraised value of a tree - The value of a tree determined by the <br />appropriate approach as described in the latest edition of The Guide for Plant <br />Appraisal, published by the Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers. <br /> <br />Canopy - the area of a tree which includes the extent of branches and <br />foliage. The collective branches and foliage of a tree or group of trees. <br /> <br />Canopy cover - The collective ground area covered by overhead tree <br />foliage. It can be viewed from the ground or above such as aerial photos to <br />determine the extent. <br /> <br />Historic Tree - A tree that has historical significance, as determined by the <br />Tree Advisory Committee. <br /> <br />Landmark tree - A tree designated by the Tree Advisory Committee as a <br />landmark Tree. To be designated a landmark Tree, a tree must (a) be <br />healthy, (b) have adapted well to the climatic conditions of the area, and (c) <br />be visible from a public right-of-way. In addition, in order for a tree to be <br />designated a Landmark Tree, the Tree Advisory Committee must find at least <br />one of the following conditions exists: <br /> <br />1. the tree is a Historic Tree <br />2. the tree is indigenous to the area <br />3. the tree is significant (e.g. large size) or unusual for a certain species <br />4. the tree has a special provenance <br />5. the tree is one of a group of trees and each tree in the group is dependent <br />on the others for survival <br /> <br />"Landmark" and "Historic" trees shall be recorded in the City Clerk's office as <br />an official record of the tree. "Landmark" trees will be identified by address <br />location, photograph, and located on a plot map drawing. Information <br />recorded shall include tree species, size, condition, and circumstances <br />allowing the designation. <br /> <br />Master Tree List - A regularly updated list of trees maintained by the City <br />specifying appropriate trees for different types of residential street tree <br />planting spaces. Trees not on the Master Tree List are not allowed to be <br />planted along residential streets. <br /> <br />Multi-stemmed tree - A tree for which the main trunk divides into two or <br />more major branches less than 36 inches above the ground surface. <br /> <br />Protected Tree - Protected Trees include (a) all Landmark Trees, (b) all <br />Public Trees, (c) all trees having a circumference of 38 inches or more, as <br />measured at a point between 6 inches and 36 inches from the ground <br />surface, and (d) all multi-stem trees for which the sum of the cross sectional <br />areas of each branch measured at the greatest point between six inches and <br />thirty-six inches above ground level exceeds 113 square inches. <br /> <br />Revised 11/29/2006 <br />Page 17 of 25 <br /> <br />7A <br />Page 21 <br />
