The department has decided to
replace the existing system by joining the San Uateo County Sheriff's Office and using their
new Voice Radio Digital Trunking System. The San Mateo County System will provide the
department with a reliable Voice Radio System for many years and their Voice Trunking
System will give the department the following enhanced futures:

1. Provide better radio coverage for the entire city.
2. Provide better radio communications between the San Mateo County Sheri~s
Office and our department.
3. Gives officers access to numerous radio channels in the field for transmitting to
our Communications Center.
4. The system has the potential for all San Mateo police agencies to join the same
radio system in the future.

Motorola Corporation has supplied the department with radio system equipment and
installation quotations on joining the County's system at a cost of $865,033.13. Additional
costs to join in using the County system will be $250,000 to buy into the system. The
department will get discounts of 50% on portable radios and between 20% to 27% discounts
on radio infrastructure and dispatch consoles. The department will realize these discounts
by purchasing radio equipment from a cooperative purchasing agreement San Mateo County
has with the Motorola Corporation. Motorola has also given the department additional
special discounts on other components of the Voice Radio System.

Motorola Corporation contracts allow the department to make any change orders as
necessary. All other city departments who currently use the Voice Radio System would
continue to be serviced by the police department when the department switches over to the
County's system.
