7A
Page 58

Taking a cut-through route via Douglas, Scott, Flynn, or Charter presents a much
more inviting route for drivers than routes tr.rough the WoodsidelBroadway,
WoodsidelBay, and the WoodsidelMiddlefield intersections. Certainly, those
buying gas at peak hours would also avoid Middlefield Road and chose to take the
CharterlStambaugh/Willow streets route to buy gas at Costco.

The point is that proposed addition a gas station to the site will result in an increase in
cut-through traffic. How does one not consider additional cut-through traffic asa
negative impact? These are residential streets. Adding more traffic will only decrease
the safety of the residents. The additional traffic will decrease the safety of our children.

Some back~ound information for the third point

The attached Google Maps web site satellite or aerial photos of the South San
Francisco Costeo at Hickey and El Camino Real show 27 cars in line around the
fueling station, 31 cars in line wit~in the perimeter of the fueling station, and an
unknown amount of cars under the awning. This represents a conservation
estimate of 58 cars within the perimeter of the gas station. For your convenience,
r have added a red line to indicate the line of cars for the gas station. I would,
also, like to point out that for some of the large gaps in this line there are obvious
oil stains showing the flow of traffic to the gas station.
- This photo was presented by me at the November 30, 2006 meeting at the Fair
Oaks Community Center. The look of surprise by some officials at this meeting
indicated they had no idea as to the lines that could form at a Costco gas station.

The point is that huge lines will be present at the gas station. Idling cars and cars that are
continuously restarted will produce a significant amount of air pollution for the local
residents, and Costco customers. How does one not consider this as a negative impact to
the local neighborhood, the children attending the nearby school. and the children using
the nearby sports facility?

Some background infonnation for the forth point:

- A Costeo Gold Membership costs $50.
- Some supporters of thft:!. 0 gas station say they need cheaper gas.
If the Costco gas wer. 5 cent cheaper. one would have to buy 1000 gallons to
offset the cost of the $ .. embership.
- Based upon the 25 MPG average I get in my VW Jetta, I would have to drive
25,000 miles each year and only buy gas at a Costeo to offset the cost on the $50
membership. I would like to add that the Energy Information Administration web
site indicates the average MPG in the US was 24.5 MPG.
The Energy Information Administration indicates the average vehicle is driven
more than 12,000 miles per year. Based on this figure, the average savings would
only be $24 per year.
