6.1C
f;1~Ts 1

ARTISTS

You will find that most artists are velY willing, and enthusiastic about participating. We have
found this to be true with both the emerging as well as seasoned artists. There will always be a few
that may not feel this is an appropriate venue for displaying art, but for the most part, artists will
come in droves, especially after participating artists relay to their friends a good experience.
We communicate to the artists the important role they play in effectively enhancing and revital-
izing a district in their city. They are helping change an area of blight into an uplifting experience for
the casual passerby. Many see their involvement as contributing to the community they live in.

. We also point out the many benefits for the artist.
- exposure to hundreds/thousands of passersbys (depending on the city you live in.)
- accessible to many people that may not frequent galleries or are "just visiting"
- an opportunity to truly network with other artists
- an opportunity to sell their work through the Phantom Galleries exhibit
- artists have been hired by art institutions for workshops and outreach programs, and
on one occasion invited into a museum group show based on their installation
- artists have been commissioned by individuals long after their exhibit came down
- an opportunity to actively participate in a movement of public revitalization through
their art.

. In our model, artists receive the following free of charge:
- the location space for two months
- installation materials (hardware, fabric, paint, temporaty walls if needed)
- marketing of their exhibit in our flyers and/or ads
- artists reception space including refreshments and entertainment for the evening

It should be mentioned that in the San Jose model, artists do give Phantom Galleries a 20%
commission on all art sold through their exhibit. They do this voluntarily and with the knowledge that
the money goes back into the project. Depending on your circumstances, you should set policy
regarding this issue before it comes up.
We do encourage all levels of artists to participate, Phantom Galleries is successful because its
focus is the promotion of the creative spirit, not judgmental of the art. We encourage emerging as
well as seasoned artists to participate, as well as school programs, outreach programs and any group
that may use art for healing or positive experience.
We do however, have a policy of "public domain appropriateness." In other words, this is not
a gaHelY situation where a visitor makes a conscious decision to enter a gallery space. This is a matter
of putting arLwork out there that the visitor may come in comact with, without a decision to do so.
Therefore, the subject matter should be sensitive to the unaware passersby, Only the producers of the
project in their particular city can determine what they believe is acceptable to their constituents.
We do suggest that the artists sign a waiver (an example is provided in the back of this book-
let) of responsibility for the producers, Although in our experience it has been a very rare occurance
of damage to the art, we are velY clear with the artists that the exhibits are voluntalY and we cannot
guarantee their safety, although every attempt is made to do so in good faith.
