As you maybe aware, this plan is the
result of a 12 -month long community process to develop and refine the conceptual design. When
built, the project will reduce speeds and increase safety for all users who ride on, or cross Roosevelt
Avenue.
While it is true that a Class IV bicycle facility would appeal to the widest range of people riding bikes,
roadway widths make construction of a Class IV facility very expensive (existing bulbouts with trees
and streetlights would need to be removed for part of the street) and contentious (at least half of
the street parking would be removed to achieve bare minimum widths for travel and bike lanes). At
this time, we are prioritizing the design and construction of Class IV routes on streets that are part of
the bike backbone network identified in the citywide transportation plan, RWCmoves.
Due to the limited roadway width and higher traffic volumes on Roosevelt, Vera Boulevard has been
identified as the preferred route for students to use when traveling to/from Roosevelt Elementary
School and other area schools. While it has been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the project
is funded and we are hopeful that the quick -build bicycle boulevard for Vera will go to construction
this year. Although the bicycle facility on Vera Avenue is a Class 3 shared roadway— it is paired with
consistent traffic calming to slow the speed of vehicles making it safer and more comfortable for
people riding bicycles.
Thank you for your interest in, and commitment to, improving bicycle facilities in Redwood City.
Be well,
JESSICA MANZI, PE
Transportation Manager
(650)465-8684 (mobile)
In response to guidance from public health officials, City administrative offices, including City Hall, are
closed to the public until further notice.
