From: Spencer Ahrens
To: GRP -City Council
Cc: Eva Markiewicz; Diane Bailev
Subject: Please stay the course on reach codes and electrification
Date: Sunday, September 20, 2020 1:26:52 AM
Honorable council members,
I emplore you to stay the course with reach codes and electrification in the upcoming second
reading vote and any related actions in the future.
Rapid electrification is one of the most critical elements of a sustainable future, and has many
additional long term benefits to our community in cost, health, and safety. Personal
preferences for antiquated technology such as gas ranges, and the marginally useful feature of
being able to cook during a power outage are not sufficient reason to avoid progress. We need
to *reduce* the future liabilities of stranded fossil gas assets, not increase them.
Cooking with electric induction cooktops is also an awesome experience and becoming very
popular with professional chefs. For example:
https://www. foodservi ceandhosi2italiiy. com/why-induction-cooking-is-the-hottest-trend-to-hit-
restaurant-kitchens/
htJps:Lyoutu.be/pd7eWOz--Wk
I highly recommend reading the Rewiring America handbook as well:
htti2s://www.rewiringamerica.org/handbook
Rocky Mountain Institute also has some great articles:
https://rmi. org/climate-change-is-ravaging-califomia-its-time-to-electrify
We deeply appreciate your tireless work through these unprecedented times, with staff spread
thin and new challenges seemingly around every corner. Now is the time for clear leadership
to take us where we need to go - as uncomfortable as decisions like this might seem, these
wildfires are just a small taste of what is to come if we don't continue to take appropriate
action. If we can't do it here, the world has no hope. The Bay Area will blaze the trail, and the
rest of the world will follow.
Sincerely,
-Spencer
