From: Laura Brown
To: GRP -City Council
Subject: Please pass All -Electric Reach Codes!
Date: Monday, September 21, 2020 11:25:16 AM
Good morning Councilmembers,
You've heard from me quite a few times on this topic, so here's a quick summary of what I
want to say: Please move forward with passing the Reach Codes as discussed at the last
council meeting -- the all -electric option with the exceptions.
I've seen some recent pushback from community members lately who are concerned about
having to give up their gas cooktops. I have some passionate cooks in my family who swear
they could never go without gas, so I understand the concern. However, new induction
cooktops (an electric option!) are actually better than gas cooking -- see this
article: https://www.reviewed.com/ovens/features/induction-101-better-cooking-through-
science
As the article notes, induction is also safer than gas. The price of induction cooktops is already
dropping.
Beyond the fact that induction is an option for those willing to spend the money on it, and that
electric stoves are on average much safer than gas cooktops, as you all know the Reach Codes
apply to new construction only. I believe this needs to be emphasized as some of my
neighbors seem to think the city is going to force them to replace their cooktops immediately.
The most important part of passing All -Electric Reach Codes, however, is building a more
sustainable foundation for the future. We are SO lucky in the Bay Area and California as a
whole to have access to clean energy like wind and solar. We need to take advantage of this by
making electricity the standard for new construction.
Please pass all -electric reach codes. It's one step of many we desperately need to take to have a
livable planet in the future.
Thank you,
Laura Brown, 94061
