4.A. - Page PFc
PENINSULA CONFLICT RESOLUTION CENTER
What has been their experience with racial equity living, working, etc in Redwood City?
• Noticed the separation of living areas. Where I live is predominately white and areas and
how they are treated - areas aren't the same (cleanliness etc.)
• Same issues as above- segregation problem- different parts of the city - where the house
is -sale in price- segregation in school - in all IP classes small population of Hispanic and
are very frustrated
• Different phases throughout life. Went to Hoover and def. Saw it in school whether the
classroom or sports. I've been a teacher at a local school - and how resources and
accessibility would make it equitable - are still. With COVID, what areas have support
(childcare) schools and others don't. It's been there for a while. Separation of equity.
This conversation is important.
• Work with a lot of youth in RWC - FLY office is in RWC shores living conditions and
environment - same as what is said. I facilitate in Juvy and continuation school- i see the
lack of resources and not knowing how to access support and resources.
• There is a lot of diversity in the community and everyone seems to co -exist and get along
• Hasn't been that great. First interaction with police was when I was in HS and was riding
my bike and get stopped by police and told that he fit a description.
o Since then, not a lot has changed and still feel uncomfortable with police
interactions
• There are a lot of celebrations of diversity and that's great but hasn't done much to
address underlying issues
o Aware of the controversy of the Sheriffs dept in turning over released inmates to
ICE.
• Connect school- mostly Hispanic- lack of resources whereas NorthStar had more
resources
• There is a racial divide in different parts of town. For example, plays- Connect doesn't
have the same resources
• The school system is the same as how the housing and policing is handled in all of
redwood city
• Clifford- didn't have as many resources
• Schools are offering computers and internet so that everyone has the same opportunity to
learn
• At Hoover not everyone was feeling comfortable- no diversity.
• Adelante and Selby lane combined schools- bilingual school
• It's difficult for me to talk because I haven't personally gone through this but I know that
my Latino counterparts have been impacted by racial equity. My Latino friend was going
through an issue and she was scared to go to the police in fear that they wouldn't help and
discriminate against her.
• City council doesn't relate or reflect the population - majority of the rwc population is
Latino and 6 members on the city council are white. They can't relate to what the
community is experiencing in terms of racial equality.
• Diversity means a lot to me BUT citizenry in RWC is not a reflection of who is
representing us on city council.
76
