4.A. - Page PFc
PENINSULA CONFLICT RESOLUTION CENTER
• Remember growing up taught to be scared of neighborhoods like that - drove by N. Fair
oaks
• I want child to not feel the same
• Was told that "north of this street" - "west of this street"- 2 RWC, those 2 community
things were real
• Agree with "^^ that was an image i also had. I still experience it - as an Indian, there's
not many, I have walked and don't see others. Traditionally very white- neighborhood
• Have had experience with police- it was positive/helpful- light skinned person of color
and also the opposite
• Also, what is others experiencing
• Saw a video on how police engaging - alarming video
• Defending the police rhetoric online
• Been to city council meetings - a lot of those speaking are those of privilege - i know
some of who are commenting-
• There is some POC, that have spoken and don't feel heard, or muted
• Don't have experience with wealthy side of town but feels there's a lack of resources/less
funding on east side of El Camino; notice when basketball teams play each other there's a
disparity, technology is slower to get to east side; recent example with shelter in place,
school district sent out a directive that no drive through graduations - several schools on
the west side didn't follow that, seems like a sense of entitlement
• Taught 5th graders for 6 years at Garfield, boy students would get stopped by police for
fitting a description at 10 years old; stable housing. Housing security has really affected
students, got in the way of focusing on school; homelessness and multiple households
were barriers for students to focus on their futures
• white lady interesting to speak about it, benefit from a lot of the institutional, long-term
things; recognize that there is entitlement, not a lot of action to change it; live in central
neighborhood, recognize that police engage with her differently than neighbors; looking
at leadership (boards, commissions, elected), not reflecting our community, colors the
way we work; work with young people that are in/at risk of being in juvenile justice
system; treated as criminals vs. kids; intention there but not the greater focus/push that
we need to achieve greater equity
• as a white person, have a very specific experience that is not shared by friends of color,
very little to no interaction with police, which is great/how it should be; don't live in a
fancy neighborhood (Eagle Hill), people are pretty happy, it's safe, that's the definition of
success; that's not what she's hearing from friends of color; almost living in a different
city; gap between the groups; disturbing to her; very neighborhood -specific, walking in
Emerald Hills or Fern Hills area, very different, affluent, white as compared to the
"flats", feels people there are seen as lesser, less desirable; cultural and racial divide
between these neighborhoods; Eagle Hill is also vast majority white; not specific to RWC
but don't see community doing anything to combat it; how do we make housing
affordable to 99%, make sure multiple families aren't living in a single apartment, how
do we help people live a more dignified life, not assuming people are lazy
• spend a lot of time walking from downtown to north, pass through the jails, huge
foreboding buildings, have done jury duty there, have to pass through these huge county
jails, reminder of racial inequity; experience/hearing from people he knows, know it's
primarily black and brown people in jails, even though it's clear that on drug charges,
78
