4.A. - Page P(!FC
PENINSULA CONFLICT RESOLUTION CENTER
whites are involved at same rates; lives in whiter district, gets a sense of different
policing due to different crimes rates but also different policing styles; can't ignore the
jails, makes him uncomfortable
• broader comment, Bay Area, Asian American woman who has lived all around the
country; racism hits a little different but still present, people that have lived here tend to
forget; she's been "ching chongged at" as much here as in the middle of nowhere in
Iowa; assumption that racism doesn't happen here; Asian population is significant in Bay
Area and still happens/not different
• We have some traditional activities over New Years. Go outside with your luggage and
go for a walk. One year, with his wife and kids, the family was walking around the block
and telling the family, "Go home, Mexicans!" Family is not Mexican and was just doing
their family tradition. Other than that, Jose feels welcomed.
• Biggest concerns - public schools and segregations. RWC closed a few schools last year
and there were challenging issues. Three of four schools closed last year were in brown
or low-income communities. Fair Oaks school gated and looks like a prison. There is a
disconnect in who is being supported. Marcalena has attended meetings and found that
schools were closed due to budget. Now having to bus kids through
• Chairperson of the Centennial neighborhood. Needs someone to translate for him (unsure
of what language he is referring to)
• Growing up in the Bay there was a perception that there was more equality, but after
learning more about history, there are lots of places of growth.
• Volunteer at the library and it does well offer services to everyone. Concerns with
gentrification and what's sustainable for someone whose parents are working multiple
jobs.
• Moved to RWC for child to attend a private special needs school. Kate's child's needs are
being met there. Kate did research and saw the disparities and noticed the differences in
class sizes and support available for students. Some financial disparities across the
County are shocking. How are dollars counted? Would love to see more out of the box
approaches to provide equity within the district.
• Not so great first day experience, White neighbor made a lot of assumptions about (POC)
parking in the street, assuming it would also bother her (as white person). Assumed
certain things about whiteness.
• Different impressions who the neighborhood is for, as if beautiful streets not for
everyone. Not willing to engage people if that is how they feel.
• Want to hear what the community is saying and what the future holds for my biracial son.
• Has not had a personal bad experience but knows people who have. Worried that
economic conditions are changing the city.
• Add the housing piece on top of that. Mix of single-family homes and more dense
properties. Hostility around dense properties. Hostility around parking was coming from
that. Race and economy and class pile on each other.
• Fires are making it tougher. We want to pretend that we are a suburban city, but housing
density is creating issues, especially making it a racialized issue.
• Not resident, but was at RWC jail & had to see the person they were visiting by video
only, felt like inmates like looking at animals -dehumanizing
79
