Family members and friends who have experienced this.
• There is an inequity issue with internet access for students who don't have access. Makes
it challenging for students. Some students may feel left out.
• Women minorities and people of color didn't feel welcomed in a local hi -tech company.
• My son who is white has a black friend. His black friend's parents have had to talk to him
about interactions with police and I haven't had to do that because of the privilege that I
have because of systemic racism.
• Disparity of COVID cases in Redwood City. Doesn't seem fair.
• Teacher demographic representation is better than other schools in the area, but there is
room for improvement.
• Discrepancy in discipline with boys and girls within schools.
• Issue of equity when parents can't speak the primary language in schools.
• Students who aren't fluent in English. Aren't able to fully access content. May not be
able to understand or participate with distance learning.
• Have been harassed by police and pulled over in the lower-income areas of RWC.
Believe there is racism in policing especially since policing began during slavery.
• Grown up in and attended RWC schools and now my son who is Hispanic is harassed and
profiled especially when he is with his Black friends. They are stopped for no reason.
• Differences in where quality food and grocery stores are located. No sidewalks where
grocery stores are located in low-income neighborhoods; makes it unsafe getting there.
• Beautiful parks in some nicer neighborhoods, none or few in low-income areas.
• Schools closures occurred more often in Black/low-income areas resulting in larger class
sizes and less resources.
• In schools when White students act out, they are viewed as just being creative but when
Black or brown students act out they are viewed as a problem and disciplined or
diagnosed as ADD/ADHD.
• Police cruise neighborhoods with higher numbers of people of color looking to give
tickets for things like failing to stop long enough at a stop sign or other subjective
infractions.
• Access to WIFI unfair — cell towers not as strong in low-income areas creates disparity in
learning.
• Diverse community, everyone seems to respect each other, police get along with the
community
• There are pockets where people can afford to live, very white areas, downtown there are
Latinos and others, there is a separation of people, I would like to live in a more mixture
of people, housing is horribly expensive.
• Concerned with school funding equity even between schools in the district
• From students and staff at Canada College: Racism and how it makes its way onto
campus and recent events nationally. How poverty and racism driven by same systems.
Higher need for resources such as wi-fi, food and housing insecurity exacerbated.
• Conversation long overdue. Exacerbated inequality. Lots of anxiety and fears as a Black
person. Viewed by others as a weapon against me. What are we working towards? Food
banks, hot spots all good. Hopeful but not sure how we get there from here.
• Serious poverty. Serious segregation. Lack of integrated neighborhoods.
•
81
