4.A. - Page r (:! Fc
PENINSULA CONFLICT RESOLUTION CENTER
What is needed to make the community stronger, more collaborative, and a welcoming
community for all? What concerns you most, and needs to be addressed immediately?
• # of police in my school - learning the school to prison pipeline. No kid should ever see
another kid taken in cuffs. It must have been so embarrassing. That's why I'm so
passionate. We need more awareness - shove it down people's throat. Equality is
important for the success of people. Everyone should have equal opportunity to be equal.
need explicit social programs! Kids didn't know where to go, there must be a ton of
places but don't know about it.
• Teen advisory board centered around teens involved in community projects. I wanted to
be a part of really building but was more volunteering i really hope that they can bring
more around equality- it's a group that's open
• Before corona, info about rwc events, my father is really involved- so we went to a lot of
events but only 10-15 ppl so awareness is not there. Spread word and restrictions are
lifted once covid is better so there is more participation
• Safety of people of during the pandemic - I'm outside wearing a mask etc. lots of groups
of ppl youth and adults 20+ ppl no mask no social distancing and seem they don't
understand the important
• Making masks and social distancing more important - for safety
• Teach youth about CA laws - they have negative encounters with Police. For various
reasons gang, area you live etc. their neighborhoods are being policed by majority white
officers. The engagement is different- more Latino officers and less white in those
neighborhoods
• Agree about school to prison pipeline- Latino/Spanish speaking families are still unaware
of this and work a lot. They need information in Spanish so they can understand etc.
• Fly during covid was able to help them especially those in poorer neighborhoods. So
police encounters are impacted. In Polynesian/Latino community should be supported
better. Have they ever been asked, "what can we do to serve/support you?"
• FLY teach youth their rights/police engagement and empathy, theft crimes etc. gangs and
are at school sites.
• Getting community voice - for whatever reason, don't feel empowered to do that. In
Latino communities depending on status- they may not be comfortable being in a City
space or talking to police. They know the consequences because of that fear- its limiting
to voicing their opinions
• As a teacher, parents share their thoughts. I wasn't tied to the police or city. They have a
lot of concerns and worries especially for their kids but are not comfortable speaking out
about that. Spills over to not just schools but to other city issues. That voice is still not
present. I was there on Sat. wasn't high. And noticed that right away. If we really want
their voice because they live and raise their kids- how can we really make them feel
comfortable. They may "out" themselves. It's a huge piece. That's most important- how
can we really support that. The population i work with were most impacted were
newcomers into RWC
• Youth transitioning - need more support
• This process is trying to meet them where they are at - so we can have community
members give input about these issues. There are a lot of misconceptions- fear, covid and
confusion.
82
