4.A. - Page 1r(!FC
FC
PENINSULA CONFLICT RESOLUTION CENTER
What ideas/suggestions do you have for addressing these complex issues?
• For groups I've participated in (small camps) are helpful if more youth participate
• People know how there is racial inequality in RWC
• The city to increase or enhance the covid restrictions (masks and social distance)- see that
things can get worse
o Q: where do you see or get the information
o A: from my parents and the news
• COVID- be stricter on wearing masks/social distancing
• Reallocate funds into social programs - I'm a big advocate of defending police
• Reduce white police presence and more of those in color
• Helping people with the problems that they have- homelessness should not be a crime it
should be a community member/social service
• Love the FLY law program - it's good to have this knowledge so that youth/kids know
how to dialogue with PD
• Maybe make it mandatory for kids to learn their law
• Make it mandatory for Law Enforcement to take a 2 semester in ethnic studies especially
if you are white officer. You need to have some type of understanding of why certain
groups act the way they do as opposed to a Caucasian person. That would be a spark to
show we really want to do right by the community
• Diversify the police - sending 20 white police officers doesn't help at all. If you send
Latino police into a Latino community- it may be better, the relationship and
understanding is there. It's important
• Ethnic Studies: to understand someone's background is important and could help. "I'm
here to learn." to be a police officer in RWC I had to take a class to better suit me for the
job.
• Youth that take FLY's law class have seen it work they apply the skills and knowledge
• Kids should not be handcuffed/arrested instead of arrested they aren't even getting
suspended. Latino & Polynesian youth.
• What are the requirements to be a police officer in RWC (agree with what was said)?
Wife is immigration lawyer- she sees a lot from refugees and others. She is surprised at
the process that law enforcement is required to do before becoming an officer. Then
given the keys to enforce.
• You can't assume that being Latino, I know what other Latino's experience- so upping
requirements on racial and equity has to be mandatory.
• Build trust and communication - right now, it's at opposite ends. There is fear, sadness,
and anger.
• Education in classrooms should reflect the community more. - they know they matter and
see themselves in the curriculum that's being taught. It will give them a voice.
• From a teacher standpoint, continue to do race and equity work. education, teaching,
learning can be overlooked as a system of racism - but it is. We see it data- we can see it.
• I would hate for my child to feel less than someone else because of who they are.
• Including the youth in our community when it comes to decision making with city
programs
• Instead of having police presence on campus, use that fund to have more independent
counselors or Mental Health and Social workers for students
• Open communications between city council members and the community
91
