The representation in this meeting is limited to a certain group who has the
time and access.
• Not just about self-confidence. Physical safety - black and Latinx have a real fear of
their safety. Worse impacts of policing don't fall equally along all aspects of society.
Real fear.
• The community needs to double its efforts with more outreach and more meetings
(look at this group). If you don't have zoom or a computer, it is really difficult to be
reached out to.
• Other avenues - media, need to do more. Some only heard about this because of an email
to the mayor. The city knows how to mail the water bill, needs more opportunities
• Other channels? Water bill had a message on the printed bill where the city could put
a message.
• Mobile phone might be a way to get the word out.
• Individuals need to be personally responsible, even though it is intimidating.
• Don't recommend having officers on campus in neighborhoods of color - esp.
Elementary, officers should be provided more training (ongoing), -also mental
health/counseling/mediation training too
• To create change, need education system (high school, community colleges) to
collaborate to empower students
• Disagree that we should teach police to do mediation/counseling-can use people who
already have the skills more cost-effectively, triggering for kids to see guns, -more
transparency about what police do & decide who can do some functions better
• More orientation toward restorative justice -youth AND adults
• City of San Mateo program multi -faceted, involved community, clergy, students
mentoring, etc. - did not emphasize punishing- officers uniformed but without guns
• All the "iconography" associated with police is triggering (black & white cars, guns,
more)
• Not fair to ask police to take on domestic violence mediation -use people with that
expertise
• Another participant says she wants an officer to show up & arrest! But there are police
who have more skill, use them where needed, others elsewhere
• Some cities have crisis intervention teams
• Reorganize roles of police to improve relationship with community, have participation of
community members -social workers, counselors
• Too many kids in juvy-need restorative justice
•
• Get younger generation engaged — reach out
• Reach out to those you are not familiar with (backgrounds)
• Can't rely on City alone; individuals can take action
• As white privileged middle-class woman, never had police encounter; Do not `defend'
police — but invest in social services
• More role playing or similar tools to make discrimination real to those who are not
usually impacted (example BART)
