The days dedicated to this activity added time to the project.
9. RFI Responses
a. Considerable numbers (volume) of RFI / clarifications raised in the project.
The project required over 90 Requests for Information (RFI) to clarify many aspects of the build, mostly
regarding the issues listed above. The majority of the responses, addressed by SSA, the project landscape
architect, required responses from their sub -consultants such as the civil engineer, structural and
geotechnical engineer and electrical engineer. Although the timely responses to the RFIs did not cause
delay some of the solutions triggered changes to the scope that added time to the project.
10. Smoke and Air Quality Safety Issues
a. Project shut down several days to due poor air quality from seasonal wild fires in 2019 and
2020.
11. Unworkable Conditions due to Oversaturated Soil
a. There were 133 days where the project was extended due to no work days related to
unworkable site conditions due to overly saturated soil.
Bothman and staff negotiated the amount of compensable delays that occurred through extraordinary
circumstances as well as discoverable items in the field during construction. Bothman has been an
excellent partner throughout the navigation of these circumstances and City staff has provided an
immense level of support to make this playground happen in Redwood City.
The playground in Red Morton Park was last renovated in 1999. Many aspects of the playground and park
did not comply with current ADA codes and served a limited portion of the community. The inclusionary
design of the new play space is intended for all sizes, ages and abilities so families are able to play together
on variety of specialized slides, swings, spin and sway equipment. The playground is considered beyond
ADA, the newly expanded parking lot now provides a safe, accessible drop off area to the park, and the
new park entrance offers a safe, pedestrian -focused connection to the neighborhood. Magical Bridge
Playground at Red Morton Park will be an asset to the community for many years to come.
FISCAL IMPACT
The $220,000.00 amendment is 3.25% of the aggregate contract amount. The attached resolution, if
approved by the City Council, will appropriate $220,000 of available Park Impact Fees to fund this
amendment to the contract. The project received significant funding from sponsorships and community
donations. Magical Bridge Foundation secured $3,116,237 in corporate, foundation and individual
donations. The City has allocated $3,878,955 in developer provided Park Impact Fees.
City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org
226
