e , <br />y%00%hills <br />November 13th, 2020 <br />SIERRA CLUB <br />PTER <br />SAV E - BAY San Mateo, Santa C Clara and San Benito PRIETA Counies <br />From: Green Foothills, Redwood City Neighbors United, Save The Bay, and Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter <br />To: Members of the Redwood City Council <br />Re: Climate Action Plan Update 2030 <br />Dear Mayor Howard and the Redwood City Council: <br />On behalf of Green Foothills, Redwood City Neighbors United, Save The Bay, and Sierra Club Loma Prieta <br />Chapter, we are writing to provide brief comment on the Redwood City Climate Action Plan 2030 (CAP). <br />With so much of the City vulnerable to shoreline and inland flooding, Redwood City should lead the Bay <br />Area in adaptation by addressing sea level rise, shoreline and inland flooding, extreme heat, wildfires, and <br />other climate impacts. The CAP update for 2030 represents an important opportunity for the City to set a <br />course for climate adaptation locally and establish a standard in the region for resilient cities. <br />We are pleased to see a call for climate adaptation planning in the most recent draft CAP provided by City <br />staff. <br />In particular we appreciate the inclusion of specific steps to advance adaptation work, including dedicated <br />staff capacity and continued focus by the Council's Environmental Initiatives Subcommittee. <br />After failing to undertake adaptation planning processes outlined in the 2013 Climate Action Plan, we feel it <br />is extremely important to identify clear first steps to support and advance the City's adaptation work. We <br />applaud progress to that end in the latest draft CAP. We strongly urge the Council also to include the <br />following specific and measurable goal under "Getting it Done" (p. 65) to address this concern: <br />"Initiate a Climate Change Adaptation Policy in 2021 - The City Council will consider and <br />adopt a policy outlining procedural steps for conducting a vulnerability assessment and <br />developing a multi-year SLR and adaptation implementation plan, to be referenced in the <br />Safety Element of the City's General Plan." <br />By including a specific and measurable initiative, we hope it will help the City realize the goals set forward <br />in the CAP. <br />Thank you for your consideration, <br />Green Foothills, Redwood City Neighbors United, Save The Bay, and Sierra Club Loma Prieta Chapter <br />Official Recommendations: Climate Action Plan Update 2030 Page 1 of 1 <br />
