7.A. - Page 2 of 66 <br />A. It exemplifies or reflects special elements of the City's cultural, aesthetic or architectural history; <br />or <br />B. It is identified with persons or events significant in local, state or national history; or <br />C. It embodies distinctive characteristics of a style, type, period or method of construction, or is a <br />valuable example of the use of indigenous materials or craftsmanship; or <br />D. It is representative of the notable work of a builder, designer or architect. <br />Projects could be eligible for listing on the California Register of Historic Resources if they meet at least <br />one of the criteria below (for reference only). <br />1. Resources that are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad <br />patterns of local or regional history, or the cultural heritage of California or the United States. <br />2. Resources that are associated with the lives of persons important to local, California, or national <br />history. <br />3. Resources that embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, region, or method of <br />construction, or represent the work of a master, or possess high artistic values. <br />ANALYSIS <br />The home is located in the Edgewood Park neighborhood and was built in 1959 on a 35,000 square foot <br />lot. Staff received a historic evaluation (Attachment C), prepared by William Kostura which concluded that <br />the home could qualify as a Redwood City landmark under Criteria B, C, and D, and could qualify for the <br />California Register under Criteria 2 and 3. <br />The home was built in 1959 by a notable and award-winning architect, Edwin Wadsworth. The house was <br />also the home of Ray and Nita Spangler, who were both notable figures in Redwood City and Peninsula <br />history. Ray Spangler was a notable Journalist and Nita Spangler was an activist who advocated for open <br />space preservation.
