City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org
The walls within alternate work area A had high levels of displacement, and the walls within alternate
work area B did not show displacement.

On June 6, 2024, City Council approved the contract for the Redwood Creek Channel Improvement near
1891 Palm Avenue. This contract allowed for the permanent repair of approximately 77 lineal feet of
concrete lined channel (Base bid + Alternate A), refer to Figure 1. Due to the relative severity of Alternate
Work A, the consultant recommended replacing this section of creek wall. The consultant did not
recommend replacement of the Alternate B section (37 lineal feet) because this section did not show
immediate signs of failure. Staff was tasked with monitoring this section of the channel wall for signs of
displacement.

Figure 1. Project Location - Bid Base and Alternate Work.
ANALYSIS
During the construction of an excavation support system, the contractor observed displacement on the
creek wall segment within the Alternate B area. On July 22, 2024, Engineering and Public Works staff,
along with the design Consultant, visited the site and confirmed that the Alternate B section moved 2.38
inches since the initial survey. This displacement indicates that the wall in Alternate B section is moving,
6.G. - Page 2 of 4
198
