28 <br />Water Storage and Distribution System <br />General. The Enterprise’s distribution system consists of distribution mains, 12 storage <br />facilities, 10 pump stations, and 26 pressure reducing valves ranging from 2 to 16 inches in <br />diameter. The Enterprise currently contains approximately 259 miles of pipeline. <br />Water Storage Facilities. The Enterprise’s 12 potable water storage facilities range in <br />size from approximately 0.10 million gallons to 8.00 million gallons with a total storage capacity <br />of 21.99 million gallons. The SFPUC <br />treats the Hetch Hetchy supply by lime addition at Rock River for corrosion control and ultraviolet <br />light at Tesla Portal and chloramination at Sunol Valley for disinfection, as well as, fluoridation at <br />Sunol Valley. Water that is delivered to Bay Area reservoirs receives filtration and disinfection <br />treatment at either the Sunol or the Harry Tracy filtration plants. Filtered water from these <br />treatment plants may be commingled with unfiltered Hetch Hetchy water in Bay Area transmission <br />pipelines. Water is continuously monitored and tested by the SFPUC to ensure that water <br />delivered to customers meets or exceeds federal and state drinking water and public health <br />requirements. The SFPUC and its wholesale customer agencies were granted filtration avoidance <br />for the Hetch Hetchy supply under Federal and State law. Under revisions to the Surface Water <br />Treatment regulations (California Code of Regulations), which became effective in July 1998, <br />public water systems serving water from the Hetch Hetchy supply must demonstrate to the <br />California State Water Resources Control Board, Division of Drinking Water (“DDW”) that the <br />supply meets the State criteria for filtration avoidance.
