<br />51 <br /> <br />employee who may elect to receive compensation in <br />lieu of sick leave credits, prorated to the date of <br />termination of service. <br /> <br />18.1.5.3 Upon retirement or death, an employee or an <br />employee’s dependents shall be paid fifty percent <br />(50%) of all of the employee's accrued sick leave. <br />Employees who die in the line of duty or whose death <br />is determined to be directly attributable to injury or <br />illness sustained while on duty shall be eligible to <br />receive one-hundred percent (100%) of accrued <br />unused sick leave. Payment of unused sick leave <br />hours shall be made at the employee’s current hourly <br />rate. <br /> <br />In the event of the death of an employee, such <br />payments shall be made to the designated beneficiary <br />filed with the Director of Finance, or, in the event no <br />designated beneficiary has been chosen, the <br />beneficiary listed in the unit member’s life insurance <br />policy will receive payment of such unused sick leave <br />as provided under the provisions for the employee <br />who elects to receive compensation in lieu of sick <br />leave credits. Employees discharged shall not be <br />eligible for payment of unused sick leave. <br /> <br />18.1.5.4 Unused accumulated sick leave at the time of <br />retirement, for which the employee receives no <br />compensation, shall be converted to additional <br />service credit at the rate of 0.004 years of service for <br />each day, i.e., 250 days of sick leave for one additional <br />year of service credit. Local safety member benefits <br />subject to a maximum of ninety percent (90%) of the <br />average final compensation will not be increased <br />beyond that limit for unused sick leave credit. <br /> <br />18.1.6 Procedures for Requesting and Approving Sick Leave <br /> <br />Employees are responsible for notifying the Battalion Chief’s office <br />of any inability to report to duty prior to the commencement of their <br />work shift. Shift employees shall notify the Battalion Chief’s office <br />prior to 0700 hours on the day the employee is to be absent and <br />shall enter the leave into the Department’s automated scheduling <br />software.
