<br />44 <br /> <br />Upon satisfactory completion of such probationary period, the employee shall be <br />appointed to a regular full-time position in that classification. <br /> <br />11.3 Specialty Assignments <br /> <br />An officer will be eligible for a specialty assignment under this Section if they have <br />been employed as a full-time sworn police officer for a minimum of three (3) years, <br />with the most recent two (2) years being served as a Redwood City Police Officer. <br />This requirement must be met by the date the specialty assignment is scheduled to <br />begin. <br /> <br />The following limitations shall apply to specialty assignments: Officer may not <br />have held a specialty position for the six (6) months prior to the beginning date of <br />the assignment. The positions of Field Training Officer, Canine Officer, and Drug <br />Enforcement Administration Special Agent are exempt from the six (6) month <br />waiting period, and any Officer who meets the qualifications may apply. Officers <br />currently in a specialty assignment may apply for any of these aforementioned three <br />(3) specialty assignments without regard to the waiting period. <br /> <br />Officers assigned to the following specialty assignments shall be assigned for a <br />period not to exceed three (3) years: Detectives, Juvenile Detective, Street Crime <br />Suppression Team Detective, School Resource Officer, DARE Officer, and <br />Motorcycle Officer. <br /> <br />Officers assigned to the following specialty assignments shall be assigned for a <br />period not to exceed two (2) years, but may be extended by one (1) additional year <br />by mutual agreement of the Officer and Police Department Administration when <br />noted: Field Training Officer, CCAT Officer, Narcotics Task Force Special Agent, <br />Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent, and Vehicle Theft Task Force <br />Special Agent. <br /> <br />The length of assignment for a canine handler shall be the working life of the dog, <br />with the minimum assignment of three (3) years. <br /> <br />Appointments to two (2) or three (3) year specialty assignments shall be subject to <br />a probationary period of six (6) months of service from the date of appointment. <br />During the probationary period an employee may be rejected from the specialty <br />assignment at any time by the Police Chief for poor performance. The Police Chief <br />will use the comments tracked in Guardian Tracking or comments obtained from <br />any special evaluations prepared by the employee’s supervisor as the basis for <br />rejection. <br /> <br />Officers assigned to the DEA Task Force shall be assigned for a period of up to five <br />(5) years, however, in extraordinary circumstances, the Chief may authorize <br />additional time in the assignment in one (1) year increments, but not to exceed a <br />maximum of seven (7) years. <br /> <br />6.I. - Page 56 of 84 <br />286
