FURNITURE AND FEATURE REQUIREMENTS
1 The number of tables and chairs to be
allowed in the public right-of-way will be
based on the California Building Standards
Code maximum occupancy requirements
and depend on the physical configuration
and constraints of the site (e.g. to ensure
clear pedestrian access in the Pedestrian
Zone).
2 Sidewalk Cafes shall have only Movable
Improvements; Parklets may have Movable
or Fixed Improvements.
3 For accessible seating requirements,
see Section 4A, Part II, Accessible Design
Requirements.
4 Tables and chairs shall match and be made
of safe, sturdy, and durable materials;
non-durable plastic is not permitted. All
furniture shall be commercial grade and
manufactured for outdoor commercial use.
Vinyl tablecloths are not recommended.
5 If trash receptacles are included on the
plans, they shall comply with the public
right-of-way access code. Trash receptacles
shall be made of commercial grade/durable
material, and to the extent feasible, match
the rest of the furniture.
V. OVERHEAD COVERING REQUIREMENTS
Umbrellas, fabric awnings, or other retractable
and soft material used for shading are Overhead
Coverings, not Overhead Structures.
1 Individual canvas or other non-vinyl
umbrellas are permitted in Parklets and
Sidewalk Cafes and shall not extend over
the Pedestrian Zone, nor into fire access
roads (a minimum 13’6” clearance vertically,
See Diagram 4). Portable tents, canopies,
or other standalone pop-up structures are
prohibited.
2 Umbrellas shall be made for outdoor
commercial use. Any fabric, membrane
shade, or other weather protection,
including umbrellas of any size, shall
be constructed of fire-resistant treated
material as per the California Code of
Regulations, Title 19, Division 1, Section
315(a). Fire-resistant materials must
have documentation of a California State
Marshal’s Seal on all panels, or meet NFPA
702 testing requirements by a NRTL, or meet
CPAI 84 standards.
3 Propane or natural gas heating devices are
prohibited inside and under any fabric shade
or membrane structures. See also Section
4A, Part VII, Heating Devices and Open
Flame Requirements.
ATTY/RESO.0017/CC RESO OUTDOOR BUSINESS ACTIVITY PROGRAM GUIDELINES - EXHIBIT A
REV: 03-03-25 JB
