Funds are also budgeted for large-scale reliability <br />improvements, including a new storage reservoir for the downtown area. <br />3. Sanitary Sewer Collection System <br />The City’s sanitary sewer collection system is comprised of approximately 184 miles of sanitary sewer <br />pipes and 31 pump stations. Most wastewater is transported to the Silicon Valley Clean Water (SVCW) <br />wastewater treatment plant in Redwood Shores through gravity flow. City staff regularly inspect and <br />maintain the sanitary sewer system, performing preventive maintenance cleaning and repairs to ensure <br />uninterrupted flow to the treatment plant. The City also maintains and repairs approximately 109 miles <br />of lower lateral pipes, which run from the property line to the sewer main in the street. This is a higher <br />level of service than many other cities and sewer districts provide, where property owners are responsible <br />for maintaining the entire length of the sewer lateral. <br />Public Works Services staff provides maintenance services when potential blockages are identified on the <br />lower lateral. A sewer clean-out must be available at the property line for City staff to access the lower <br />lateral for service. <br />9.A. - Page 9 of 20 <br />494
