These improvements were identified to help maintain the pavement in very good <br />condition and extend its useful life by 8 to 15 years, while minimizing future repair costs. To increase <br />pedestrian and bicycle safety, the project also installed new traffic signs, poles, speed cushions, and traffic <br />striping and markings. <br />Figure 1: Project Location Map <br />The project design was based on the adopted Redwood City Walk, Bike, Thrive Plan and traffic calming <br />requests the City received from neighborhood residents. This project improved roadway signage and <br />striping to increase safety for people walking and riding bicycles, consistent with the City’s Vision Zero <br />goal to increase active transportation, by installing: <br />Bicycle route signs and “Bicycles May Use Full Lane” regulatory signs <br />Bicycle shared roadway markings “sharrows” <br />Upgraded centerline striping <br />New “shoulder/parking lane” striping to narrow the lane widths to help reduce vehicle speeds <br />and shift motorists further away from the sidewalks and driveways <br />“High visibility” crosswalks <br />To slow vehicular traffic to safer speeds, six additional speed cushions were installed on Redwood Avenue, <br />bringing the total to ten. Speed cushions are a traffic calming device that is designed to slow down vehicles <br />on residential streets. The speed cushions were accompanied by pedestrian warning signs, speed advisory <br />signs, and pavement markings. To promote pedestrian safety, pedestrian warning signs were installed at <br />pedestrian crossing locations to alert motorists. To support bicycling, bike route and regulatory signs, as <br />well as pavement markings, were added to the roadway. <br />The project repaired and repaved approximately 5,300 linear feet of roadway with a new driving surface <br />and new pavement striping on Redwood Avenue between El Camino Real and Valota Road.
