The expansion design also aims at unifying the
park through site furnishings, fencing, color, and art.
Despite the narrow expansion space, the metal shade structure promotes health and wellness with a
covered, open-air space is sized to host exercise classes and other programs for all ages. The bandstand-
inspired shape of the structure contributes to the uniqueness and cultural resonance of the park. The cupola,
a typical element in Latin American bandstands resonates with the neighborhood's largely Latin American
community. Artistic cladding will tie the pre-existing park and the new space together with the potential
to become a cultural icon. In addition to promoting wellness and culture, for added safety, the shade
feature incorporates structural and maintenance benefits. The roof, ceiling, and columns now being
installed will be covered with a fire-resistant, easy to repair, resin-fiberglass material. The metal frame
structure and cladding have been structurally designed for wind and seismic safety.
A Phased Approach
The expansion of Jardin de Niños Park began in 2014 and is divided into six phases. Phase 5 involves
construction by McNabb Construction, Inc. and the fabrication of the metal structure. Table 1 below
details the activities associated with each phase. To date, the City has completed several key steps,
including purchasing the property, assessing the house for historic significance, navigating legal
requirements, demolishing the dilapidated house, clearing the site, using the site for nearby construction
staging, identifying metal fabricators willing to collaborate with an artist on the cladding and structural
calculations for the metal frame, securing necessary permits, preparing construction drawings, conducting
public bids, and setting up Wi-Fi service.
Table 1: Jardin De Ninos Park – Park Expansion Project Phases
Year Phase Number Activities
2014 Phase 1 Purchased property
2015-2016 Phase 2
Environmental assessment
Historic significance evaluation
Demolition of the dilapidated house
2017-2021 Phase 3 Site survey
Middlefield Road underground utility sidewalk
property line confirmation by a licensed surveyor
2022-2023 Phase 4 Design development for the park expansion
Parks Commission plan review
2024-2025 Phase 5 Public bidding for Supply of Metal Frame Structure
& construction of the park expansion
2025-2026 Phase 6 Fence, art, and landscape installation
2026 Open to Public Programming of the park space
The City allocated funding over for the design and construction of this project over several years.
