The results and accomplishments from the recent Work Plan are highlighted below.
Housing for Redwood City Seniors: The Redwood City Senior Affairs Commission and City staff, drawing
on ten years of experience with the Senior Homeless Flyer, have developed the Redwood City Senior
Support List. included as Attachment A. This new, comprehensive resource guide was created to offer
seniors more than just housing information, expanding to provide a broad range of senior services.
After significant research and collaboration with local agencies, this multi-language digital and print
document now guides seniors to essential services like Housing options, Transportation agencies,
Emergency providers, Food distributions, and Veterans Services. It includes 60 agencies, covering both
local and broader support. This list is a living document, reviewed twice a year by commissioners to ensure
all listed agencies are active and engaged partners.
Support Lists have been distributed to Redwood City Community Centers, Redwood Shores Senior Group,
Fair Oaks Adult Activity Center, the Farmers Market, the San Mateo County Fair, all three Redwood City
Libraries and North Fair Oaks Library. It has also been consistently featured in the Veterans Memorial
Senior Center (VMSC) newsletter for the last six months. For digital convenience, a QR code is included on
both the physical flyer and at all distribution points.
Transportation for Redwood City Seniors: The Senior Affairs Commission is concerned about the limited
low-technology transportation options available to seniors, especially with the rise of mobile driving apps
and other non-traditional services. Many seniors lack the ability or desire to use online platforms to
arrange transportation for essential needs like medical appointments, shopping, community events, or
social outings. To address this, the commission gathered resident input through a detailed multi-language
survey in 2023 and conducted a follow-up survey in 2025.
Available in both digital and paper formats, the survey was advertised for eight weeks in the local
newspaper. Commissioners personally shared it at senior centers, Casa De Redwood, Redwood Shores
Senior Group, downtown events, and the Fair Oaks Adult Activity Center, as well as with their local circles,
to gather responses.
The Commissioners made themselves available to the senior community, offering verbal and physical
assistance to anyone needing help with language barriers or writing support. An informational report for
the City Council, detailing these findings and outlining how this knowledge will better serve senior
transportation needs, has been created and can be found in Attachment B.
The SAC also discovered that many seniors in our community experienced difficulties and intimidation
when trying to renew their driver's licenses, especially with the increasing online-centric process. In
response, the Commission asked the VMSC staff to investigate solutions.
The VMSC team discovered and implemented a program called “Navigating the Department of Motor
Vehicles (DMV).” This initiative was specifically designed to help seniors renew their driver's licenses
without needing to take the traditional written exam. The program offered access to an e-Learning course
8.B. - Page 2 of 48
59
