Beyond license renewals, the
program also assisted seniors with obtaining or renewing their Real IDs, getting a free senior state ID card,
and scheduling appointments at the local DMV for their picture, eye exam, and fingerprints after
completing the e-Learning course.
For many seniors who are unfamiliar with digital platforms, the support of VMSC staff and volunteers was
crucial. They provided step-by-step guidance, ensuring that those with limited technological experience
could successfully navigate the online requirements. Through this dedicated assistance, Senior Center
staff helped 103 seniors successfully renew their driver's licenses.
In May 2024, the California DMV introduced changes for drivers aged 70 and older. These updates
eliminated the requirement for seniors with clean driving records to take a written knowledge test when
renewing their licenses, thus ending the Navigating the DMV Class at the VMSC.
Equity/Community for All Ages:
The Youth Advisory Board (YAB) and Senior Affairs Commission teamed up to host a successful Emergency
Tech Day. Six members of the YAB dedicated their time to assist eight seniors, helping them install crucial
apps and programs on their computers and smartphones. These included important alert systems such as
the San Mateo County Alert System, Nixle alerts, and Zonehaven.
After the first successful meeting, members of the YAB visited the VMSC multiple times to help seniors
update their phones and learn how to use emergency services apps. These “mini events” garnered
overwhelmingly positive feedback from the participating seniors. One senior praised the young
volunteers, saying, ”What an engaging, smart, courteous, and poised group of young adults on Redwood
City YAB. I was blown away by the experience and wish more adults could be exposed to these future
leaders.”
This positive feedback underscores the vital role young people play in bridging the digital divide and
fostering valuable intergenerational connections within the community. Due to the success of this
initiative, additional gatherings are planned for the future, ensuring continued support and tech education
opportunities for Redwood City's seniors.
The New Year’s Eve 2023 " storms highlighted a critical need: many seniors are not “digitally native” and
struggled to find emergency information. While ”going online” might seem like the obvious solution for
checking evacuation orders, shelter locations, or available services, a significant portion of our senior
community either lacks internet access or struggles to navigate it quickly during a crisis.
In addition to teaming up with the YAB on several occasions for Emergency Preparedness, the SAC asked
VMSC Staff to come up with an Emergency Preparedness Forum for Seniors program. This forum offered
a unique opportunity for attendees to gain awareness of potential disaster scenarios and learn actionable
steps for personal preparation. Each attendee received a free preparedness calendar and had the chance
to win additional prizes through Disaster-Readiness Bingo.
8.B. - Page 3 of 48
60
