This program will encourage direct engagement and feedback as well
as communication and community building.
Club 1333 will continue to feature housing and transportation as speaking topics. This venue provides a
consistent platform to revisit essential subjects like healthcare, a former strategic priority for the Senior
Affairs Commission, and to introduce additional pertinent discussions.
Transportation: Improve Senior Mobility Awareness through the education of transportation programs.
Moving into the future, the VMSC will continue to offer the AARP Driver Training Course, the CHP Age
Well/Drive Smart Class, and the SamTrans Mobility Program. We will also introduce the new” Got Wheels”
subsidized taxi program with a speaker and applications. In addition, we will update the Senior Support
list with valuable local transportation organizations and programs identified in our recent survey.
“Current Concerns Conference” & Calendar
Building on an idea from a SAC planning retreat, an annual mini conference will be presented. In addition
to monthly Club 1333 meetings, this event will address the challenge of rapidly changing information. It
will focus on current senior events, ensuring the community knows where to find accurate and up-to-date
information.
The VMSC Staff and the SAC will collaborate to host an annual 2–3-hour interactive mini conference. This
event will feature a current senior event, providing a forum for seniors to discuss relevant issues.
The Current Concerns Conference can include the traditional topics the SAC historically pursues for
strategic priorities and goals such as Housing, Transportation, and Community for All Ages, or can focus
on a new or current event. By incorporating this style of information dissemination into the work plan,
the commission will be able to immediately impact the community when a topic arises.
“Current Concerns” are items in the media that are time sensitive and that can affect our senior
population. These are trends or possibly threats that should be looked at by the commission with the idea
of how to pass this information onto the seniors of the community before the topic becomes passé.
For a mini conference with seniors, a combination of styles will likely be most effective. Starting with a
brief lecture/presentation to introduce the topic, then transition to round tables for smaller group
discussions, followed by a panel discussion or fireside chats with local experts addressing key takeaways
and answering questions.
In addition, VMSC’s annual calendar will be distributed in July, coinciding with the conference’s topic. This
timing ensures the conference’s theme stands out. Each month of the calendar will feature a different tip
and resources for seniors.
Beyond its primary function, the calendar doubles as a portable emergency information reference,
allowing users to readily access important phone numbers, contacts, and other vital data in case of
evacuation. Its distribution is strategically timed to facilitate emergency readiness and serve as a crucial
reminder prior to wildfire season and for seniors to annually update their personal information.
8.B. - Page 5 of 48
62
