Difficulty Reaching Destinations: Despite the high number of drivers, some seniors still face
transportation challenges. The most common destinations they have trouble reaching are for
social/recreational activities (13%) and healthcare appointments (11%).
Issues for Walkers: For the smaller group of seniors who walk, the most common issues are
driver behavior (22%) and poor sidewalk conditions like holes or bumps (20%).
Recommendations for Improving Public Transit Use
To encourage more seniors to use public transportation, the survey results point to three key factors
that would increase usage:
More frequent service: This was the top factor, with 47% of respondents citing it as a reason
they would increase their public transit use.
Improved waiting conditions: Providing bus shelters with shade (41%) and benches with
clear information and route maps (39%) were also top priorities.
Increased accessibility: Less standing and fewer stairs were noted as important factors for
increasing usage.
Information Channels
To effectively reach seniors with information about transportation options, the most successful
strategy would be to use a combination of digital platforms and social networks.
Digital: The most common method for finding information is the Internet (49%).
Social: Personal networks are also a primary source, with 44% of respondents relying on
family and friends and 31% using word of mouth.
Recommended and completed action steps based on survey results
Survey Findings on Information Access
Our recent transportation survey reveals that while a significant portion of respondents access
information online, personal networks remain a crucial source. Nearly half of those surveyed (49%)
use the internet for information. However, a substantial number still rely on personal connections:
44% get information from family and friends, and 31% receive it through word-of-mouth.
Based on these findings, the Commission will expand its community engagement programs to reach
seniors where they already gather and share information. We'll be offering programs at the Veterans
Memorial Senior Center, Fair Oaks Adult Center, and the Redwood Shores Senior Group to discuss
transportation services. These initiatives will also be featured at Club 1333 and our SENIOR MINI
CONFERENCE, which are excellent venues for this type of outreach.
For example, we will partner with the Youth Advisory Board to host a transportation tech session.
During these sessions, youth and volunteers will assist seniors with adding rideshare contacts to their
phones, downloading rideshare apps, and learning how to use them.
8.B. - Page 20 of 48
77
