Downtown Beautification
Landscaping and beautification efforts greatly
contribute to the appeal of downtown Redwood
City. Throughout 2024, the RCIA continued
to invest in the beautification of Downtown
Redwood City. Their efforts were focused all
throughout downtown and aided in the creation
of beautiful and welcoming community spaces.
The Sounds of Redwood City -
Piano Design Project
In an effort to bring more foot traffic and
community gathering opportunities to Downtown
Redwood City, the RCIA launched their
experiential and media campaign titled “Sights,
Sounds & Tastes of Redwood City”. To play into
the ‘Sounds of Redwood City,’ the RCIA chose
two artists to complete the full coverage design
of two baby grand pianos purchased by the RCIA.
Fernando Escartiz and Christine Ong-Djicks were
carefully selected based on how well they were
able to connect and speak to the community
through their design concepts. The RCIA held an
unveiling ceremony for the first piano, “El Piano
Alebrije” by Fernando Escartiz on September 11,
2024 in Jazz Plaza, located next to City Hall and
across from the Downtown Library on Middlefield
Road. The piano “Living the Life” designed by
local artist Chrisine Ong-Djicks, is set to be
unveiled in 2025.
2024 ANNUAL REPORT • PAGE 7
Placemaking Space
In early 2020, the RCIA identified 10 distinct
locations within downtown to highlight as
spaces for people to come together and enjoy
everything the community has to offer. Known
as the “Placemaking Program” the goal was to
create public spaces that benefit the community’s
happiness and wellbeing. In May 2024, the
RCIA invested $30K towards the purchase of
new tables (10) and chairs (40), including ADA-
compliant tables (2).
8.A. - Page 11 of 33
23
