Page 2 of 6 <br />City of Redwood City 1017 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, CA. 94063 Tel: 650-780-7000 www.redwoodcity.org <br />BACKGROUND <br />Redwood Creek and its tributaries comprise about eight miles of waterway in Redwood City. It conveys <br />storm water run-off from the Emerald Hills and nearby watersheds through Redwood City, to the San <br />Francisco Bay. Several miles of Redwood Creek were lined with concrete in the late 1960’s. The Redwood <br />Creek concrete-lined channelized system and the Redwood Creek Watershed and Wetland Capacity <br />Project Scoping boundary is shown in Figure 1. <br />Figure 1. Project map of Redwood Creek and Its Branches. <br />In 2021, the City sought to comprehensively assess current conditions and capacities within Redwood <br />Creek’s concrete-lined channels and then scope a single project that both improves flow capacity and <br />decreases flood risk of the creek. To support this effort, the City applied for a Federal Emergency <br />Management Agency (FEMA) Flood Mitigation Assistance (FMA) program grant. On September 11, 2024, <br />FEMA awarded the City a $888,603 grant, administered by the State of California’s Office of Emergency <br />Services (CalOES). <br />This FEMA grant funds a consultant to collect background information, modeling, and a preliminary <br />project design.
