Kostura, 839 Blandford Boulevard evaluation <br />The Secretary’s Standards are applied to this project as follows: <br />1.A property will be used as it was historically or be given a new use that requires <br />minimal change to its distinctive materials, features, spaces and spatial relationships. <br />This building will continue to be used as a residence, its historic use. <br />2.The historic character of a property will be retained and preserved. The removal of <br />distinctive materials or alteration of features, spaces and spatial relationships that <br />characterize a property will be avoided. <br />All of the features that convey this house’s Colonial Revival Ranch style will be <br />preserved. Those include the broadly horizontal plan, the hipped roof, the brick <br />veneer at the front of the central wing, the lintels and shutters in this wing, the <br />recessed porch in the rear, the two box (or oriel) windows that flank this porch, and <br />the brick veneer at the bases of the two box windows. The brick pathways in front <br />and in the rear, the two contributing brick patios, and the brick wall behind one of the <br />patios will also remain. The project thus meets this Standard. <br />3.Each property will be recognized as a physical record of its time, place and use. <br />Changes that create a false sense of historical development, such as adding <br />conjectural features or elements from other historic properties, will not be <br />undertaken. <br />No conjectural features that create an inaccurate feeling of historicism will be added. <br />Where brick is added to the north wing, it will nearly but not quite exactly match the <br />color of the surrounding brick, thus distinguishing original from added fabric. The <br />project thus meets this Standard. <br />4.Changes to a property that have acquired historic significance in their own right will <br />be retained and preserved. <br />A small extension to the north wing that appears to have been added between 1939 <br />and 1950 will be retained. The project thus meets this Standard. <br />5.Distinctive materials, features, finishes, and construction techniques or examples of <br />craftsmanship that characterize a property will be preserved. <br />The distinctive materials and finishes on the exterior of this house are the brick <br />veneer in the central wing, lintels above windows and the main entrance in the same <br />wing, brick sills, shutters (these are of uncertain date but may be original), and <br />7 <br />9.A. - Page 107 of 247 <br />365
