6.2A
Page 14
This will help separate cyclists from the heavy truck traffic that travels on Shoreway
Road to and from the highway. Due to the volume of truck traffic at this location it is
often hard for cyclist to navigate this intersection. A through bike lane will also be
installed for southbound cyclists. New bike sensitive traffic signal detectors will be
installed to help cyclists cross the intersection. Bike route signs and sharrows will be
installed on northbound Shoreway Road. In the San Carlos portion of Shoreway Road~
which is parallel to highway 101 ~ San Carlos has agreed to restripe its roadway section
and install Class II bike lanes up to the San Carlos/Belmont city limit.

How does the project improve air quality? Explain:

The proposed Skyway/Shoreway Bike' Route Improvement proiect.. due to ai1l'ort
regulations preventing the use of the planned network route. will provide a gap closure
for the Regional Bikeway Network and the Bay Trail. This will provide both commute
and recreational cyclists greater access to the Regional Bikeway Network and a safer
riding experience than the current situation in this area. Currently cyclists are forced to
travel along Skyway Road to Redwood Shores Parkway ~ sharing travel lanes with
motorists. with no signage alerting drivers of their presence.' Commute cyclists often
then continue north on Shoreway Road following a north/south route adiacent to
Highway 101. All of these protect roads are currently unimproved for cyclists. For this
reason some cyclists are discouraged from using their bicycles to commute north and
south in this area. The new bicycle improvements will alert drivers to the bicycle rider's
presence on the roadways~ in some areas providing dedicated bike lanes to separate
cyclists from the motorists~ and encourage increased ridership and reduce motor vehicle
usage to travel north and south along the Peninsula.

In addition. this protect provides recreational access via a San Francisco Bay Trail
connection. and a completed route on the eastside of Highway 101 has potential to
encourage additional commute cycling to several of the large employers in that area. such
as Oracle and Electronic Arts.

Total Project Cost: $289.650.00

% of Amenities/ Total Proj ect Cost: 0%
(Amenities defined as ADA access improvements, utility trenching, drainage work, fire
hydrants, landscaping, cosmetic resurfacing, surface improvements, etc.)

GAP CLOSURESI BARRIERS

Is the project identified in the MTC Regional Bicycle Plan as a project on the Regional
Bicycle Network? If so, list the specific project as defined in Attachment A Unbuilt
Regional Bikeway Network Links. How does the project overcome a gap or barrier in
the bicycle system network? Explain:

The proposed Skyway/Shoreway Bike Route Improvement protect due to ai1l'ort
regulations preventing the use of the planned network route. would provide a gap closure
for the Regional Bikeway Network and the Bay Trail. This will provide both commute
and recreational cyclists greater access to the Regional Bikeway Network and a safer
riding experience than the current situation in this area.
